CY03 - SS2

2003 CY, SS2 Action

  • Stage:Lagoudera - Spilia 1
  • Stage info:Why not start this rally with a real bang? The traditionally first stage is followed by the longest stage of this years Rally Cyprus. It is a stage put together like a puzzle, it is identical to the Lagoudera – Kapouras stage last year (SS2) but from here it takes a short tarmac stretch connecting to parts of last year’s Kapouras – Agios Theodoros stage and the end is identical to the end of the Kourdali – Spilia stage from leg2 last year. There is enough material for loads of ups and downs for everybody. As a very nice example, the first half of the stage is the scene where ord’s Francois Duval took for the first time in his career the lead of a WRC event, the last few km was where Duval retired last year with an engine problem!
  • Distance:38.32km
  • Record:no record, new stage in this combination

Action info:

  • Incidents: It was predicted that this stage would bear problems. And so it was. Richard Burns had to drive for most of the stage on a front puncture. But his time was still not too bad, unlike Francois Duval, who suffered a gearbox problem towards the end of the stage and Carlos Sainz, who lost over a minute for unknown reasons. Juuso Pykälistö as well drops down the order. But in the worst trouble is new boy Justin Dale, dropping over 10 minutes on the stage, again for unknown reasons.
  • Performances:Magic drive by Harri Rovanperä, he looked OK throughout the stage, but he has done something special on the last few kilometers to pip Marcus Grönholm, Tommi Mäkinen and Gilles Panizzi, who were all going very strong indeed. Amazingly, Gilles Panizzi is now 2nd overall behind Harri!
  • Stage winner:Harri Rovanperä, Peugeot 206 WRC Evo3, 35m18.4s
