Impressively Petter Solberg is the first non-French car in the event and Markko Martin is the third, just behind Francious Delcour. One Citroen and three Peugeots lead the trio, putting Petter in 5th and Markko in 7th. The rally started shockingly for once again for the Subaru world rally team. Toshihiro Arai crashed out on the first stage and Richard Burns lost time with an off on stage 2. He now lies in 13th overnight +2mins 14.4s off the pace.
Lucky enough for Burns his 13th place is not the end of his championship hopes. Auriol and Gronholm are really the only leading championship drivers in with a chance of points and they are 15 and 16 points behind Burns. It looks like the drivers championship will go down to the last two gravel events! Exciting stuff!!
Richard Burns said: "I thought I heard Robert (Reid) call two fourth-gear right-handers but instead, he'd called a fourth-gear tightening into a third-gear. I went wide and hit the rock face. It bent the left-front wheel back into the arch and that made it hard on right-handers."
Markko and Petter and doing a great job, let's hope they can gain a few of those vital seconds and at least keep their current positions. It will be interesting to watch.
Petter Solberg said: "It's going quite well. We seem to have cured almost all of the understeer that was such a problem for me in Sanremo and the car's now handling well. On the longer stage I chose a harder tyre that I'd never used before and I was unsure of it at the start, but I'm basically quite pleased."
PS. I cannnot seem to get through to the press site where I can get Subaru photos from Corsica - as soon as I can I will put photos up. Thanks,
