This year's drivers championship is one of the most exciting yet. There are no less then six drivers with a chance in the championship. Colin McRae and Tommi Makinen are tied at the top of the table with 40 points, Richard Burns is on 34 with Carlos Sainz on 33. As there are still 20 points still available on the final two rounds, Harri Rovanpera (27 points) and Gilles Panizzi (22 points) round off the six drivers who are mathematically able to clinch the title.
Although Harri and Gilles are both very remote chances for the title we know anything is possible in Rallying.
Colin McRae will be strong in Australia and has a great chance to wrap the title up. If he and Makinen are on even points at the end of the season McRae currnetly has more second places to his name (they are both on three wins) and would win the championship.
With a question mark over the performance of the new Lancer WRCar Makinen could be significantly disadvantaged, but the feeling is the car will perform much better on gravel.
With a winning history in Australia and Great Britain Richard Burns is a huge chance at taking the title especially after great championship results over the last few years. It would be a sweet farewell to Subaru.
While many people would probably write off Carlos Sainz I think they'd be foolish to do so. Carlos is Mr. Consistent and will definitely be up there which could easily count with the pressure on Makinen, Burns and McRae.
Here are the results of the poll question asked on Subaru.Wrc-Online.net, Will Burns win the battle for the drivers title over Aus and GB?:
|Yes, For Sure!||29.1%|
|Too Hard, Will be tight||45.5%|
|He'll fail under pressure||9.1%|
|Another 2nd Place||16.4%|
I think that sums the situation up nicely - it's going to be awesome!!! and we'll bring it all to you here on Wrc-Online.net. Make sure you join us to discuss everything that happens on the Message Boards and in the Chat Room.
