Renault R5 Turbo General Information

The first R5 Turbos may have been group 4 homologated, but it was a clear sign that the rally future was supercars. The R5 Turbo debuted at roughly the same time as the Audi Quattro, which as well started life as a group 4 car. And you can compare the projects. The Audi Quattro is to the day regarded as a revolution to rallying for it being the first 4x4 turbo rally car. But the R5 Turbo was just as much a revolution to rallying as the Quattro was. It had a turbo mid-engine layout and to do that to a car as small as the R5 (i.e. 341mm shorter than a 206 WRC) was quite insane!

It was incredible that the car was actually designed for the French championship rather than the WRC - and a shame as well. The R5 Turbo won a snowy Rallye Monte Carlo 1981 outright, which was the Quattro WRC debut. And it was 5th in GB the same year, so it didn't necessarily need tarmac to shine. Given as well that the Lancia Rally beat the Quattro in the makes WRC two years later, it would have been really interesting to see the Renault R5 Turbo fighting it out with the Audi Quattro on WRC level.

It was nevertheless a spectacle whenever the R5 Turbo was entered. The car looked as wide as it was long. Incredible alone, as much believe you may have in turbo engines, that Renault managed to turbo boost a little 1.4 litre engine to 255BHP! And when the group B version of this car came it was even going to get better!
