Nissan Bluebird 180SSS General Information

The Bluebird was Nissan's/Datsun's first experiment with turbo engines in competition. It never was a big story in rallying as Datsun's main program of that time and decade circled around the Violet and Silvia models. Though there were works supported Bluebirds around. But soon the turbo engines had been moved into group 2 Silvias and after all turbo technology didn't really become a big issue for Nissan until the Sunny GTI-R much later. The Bluebird Turbo was an interesting but short lived project.

I would actually love to write more about this. Me personally, I love turbos and I love straight designs. Hence there are not many Asian cars I like. I.e. barrock, curved Bluebird 180B? Yuk! However this Bluebird generation came in 1979, all square and straight with exciting engine. A bit in design like a smaller, 4-door saloon to the Silvia 240RS. But, although Jim Donald took it to 5th overall on Rally NZ 1983, the Bluebird 180SSS Turbo was only used in rallying very occasionally between 1981 and 1983, rarely with a top driver. And on the road it was replaced by the Primera range, which, pardon me, was back again to Asian nonsense design diarrhea.
