Mitsubishi Lancer (EX) General Information

The Lancer Turbo in 1981 was Mitsubishi's first serious rally project - or was it? It certainly was the start of a new era for Mitsubishi. Andrew Cowan took charge of a new company called Ralli Art. Interestingly Ralli Art was then based in Steyr, Austria, on the premises of a company called Denzel, who was a Mitsubishi importer before the UK had one. And the cars were in a new distinct, really standing out white & orange colour scheme. But more importantly, this car was based on a brand new generation Lancer, a smart, short saloon with really clear cut, no-nonsense lines - beautiful! In its much straightened design the step to the new Lancer, compared to the very barrock even messy looking Colt Lancer formerly used in Africa by Cowan and Singh, reminded a bit of Ford's move from MkI to MkII Escort. Maybe this is just me, but the angle of the boot lid with its stuck on black rubber spoiler somehow reminds me of the Escort MkII. Well, it did not look much like an Escort but early Lancers were roughly the same size and in some details you could well get the impression in its first 2 generations the Lancer was inspired by the first 2 generations of the Ford Escort.

For the rally stages it is hard to tell if the Lancer Turbo was created with Escort, Fiat 131, Ascona and co on mind, but if it was it had a novelty in this comparison: The Lancer's 2000cc engine was turbo charged and had a torque the above named models could only dream of.

Yet even more importantly when looking back, the Lancer 2000 Turbo was the first rally car ever to use an ECU (black box or golden box in the case of the Lancer). This ECU controlled engine functions and settings such as ignition, injection and boost and already back then there was talk that one day such an ECU could control things as differentials as well.

The car was certainly performing well, but it had reliability problems. The reliability problems came often, but were mostly really small issues like clutch or alternator, issues as could be regarded as normal for such a new design. It therefore is a shame that the car never became a regular sight on the WRC stages, which is as well what throws up the question if Mitsubishi was really that serious about the project. Of course the dawn of 4x4 could have calmed down motivation. Still a 3rd overall on the 1000 Lakes 1982 - behind 2 Audi Quattro - only showed what could have been as the project was called off after only 1 1/2 seasons of unregular appearances - a wasted opportunity really.
