Subaru Leone General Information

Subaru's first rally car came pretty late, only 1981. The team around Subaru's own Noriyuki Koseki concentrated straight away on the Safari Rally and had massive reliability problems with these early cars. The cars actually managed a class win soon on the Safari, but the celebrations were a little spoiled by the fact that Subaru seemingly had to enter like 10 or 12 cars to get at least a couple to the finish. The better effort was quite likely that of privateer Possum Bourne in NZ. But Subaru was a far cry from the professional ways as with the Prodrive cooperation.

Otherwise the Leone or L-Series or 1800 model (all the same model with a bit of name confusion) is already explained in the Subaru manufacturer story, as for many years it was Subaru's main model. The 1st generation is not known in Europe. The 2nd generation covered here was roundy, barrock, ugly, sold in Europe and did a large deal to Subaru being regarded as a farmers car. The 3rd generation was much more square and tidy in design but still could not lift the farmers car image. That image change only came through rallying with Legacy and Impreza models. See how important and worthwile rallying can be in marketing, although the WRC-series organisers today seem to have forgotten.

But here we are still in the 2nd generation of farmers Leone. Although rallied was the 4-door saloon, the 2nd generation Leone in design is probably best brought to your mind through its pick up version called Subaru Brat, that was dropped with the 3rd generation Leone.
