Lancia Rally General Information

It is tempting to say the Lancia Rally 037 was a specially made rally car, like the Stratos. It was a mid-engine racer like the Startos, too. But in design it was actually based on the mid-engine road car Lancia Beta Montecarlo. It is not quite sure if it is coincidence or not that the Montecarlo was Lancia project number 137 and the Rally was Abarth project number 037. Indeed the Delta S4 was Abarth project number 038. It is also not quite clear why the project number was part of its official name, Lancia has never done that on any other car. But it is highly interesting for us rally fans, that the main name of this car was "Rally".

The Lancia Rally 037 was one of the most unusual and most characterful groupB cars there ever was. It was one of the first groupB cars as well as the Lancia Rally in fact was groupB from the beginning and i.e. before the Audi Quattro. Indeed you could argue the Lancia Rally 037 to be the first groupB car full stop. Because groupB came with the start of the 1982 season and the Lancia Rally debuted on the Tour de Corse in May 1982 and therefore was the first car developed from scratch to groupB. I.e. Porsche 911, Opel Ascona 400, Audi Quattro and Renault R5 Turbo all started life as group4 cars that at some point were transferred into groupB.

Interesting is that the Audi Quattro is the car the Lancia Rally should be compared to, even though these 2 cars seem to have absolutely nothing in common apart from both having 4 wheels. With the birth of groupB these two makes decided to achieve the same targets with two concepts that could not have been any more different if you tried: The Audi Quattro was a 4x4 turbo layout. The Lancia Rally had neither 4x4 nor turbo, although its engine had forced induction through a Rootes type supercharger. But in total contrast to the Audi, the Lancia was a mid engined, super light tarmac racer, maybe a bit orientated on the Stratos - though interestingly the Rally had a longitudinally mounted engine where the Stratos was transverse. We all know now that in the end Audi's 4x4 turbo concept succeeded, but there was a time you really couldn't be sure if this was the way to go. The 4x4 Audi was heavy, unreliable (complicated) and its handling was a nightmare, all areas the Lancia Rally excelled in! And this resulted in very surprising battles. In 1983 the mid-engine RWD Lancia beat the 4x4 turbo Audi in the makes WRC. Some people argue it was only by 2 points, but if you look at single results, some of them were just shocking for the Audi. In that year Lancia never even started in Sweden, Safari or GB (such having at least 2 scoring opportunities less). The Lancia would drive circles round the Audi on tarmac, but it also won events as NZ. The most outstanding result was probably the Acropolis 1983. This was an event, as rough as ever, where the 4x4 Audi should have had a massive advantage and the Lancia was regarded as too fragile in design to cope with, yet thanks to reliability and good handling at the finish it was Lancia to celebrate a convincing 1-2 over Audi's 3 car team!

Another big point on the Lancia Rally 037 is that most people seem to have forgotten or never realised that Lancia had 3 "Evo" versions of this car. Not only that, the 3rd evolution was a massive and exciting step. Well, it is the 1st evolution that hardly anybody noticed. On its first starts Tour de Corse and Acropolis 1982 the car had Lancia Beta Montecarlo rear lights that disappeared soon together with aerodynamic and air-flow work at the front as the 2nd version. The car also became much more solid at the same time, as in it's first starts the chassis seemed weak - and interestingly Lancia then entered this tarmac racer into the Bandama Rallye with the purpose to break it and improve it further. The name "Evo" however only came with the 3rd evolution that was launched for the Rally Monte Carlo 1984. That this 3rd, big step evolution was never going to be as successful as the first 2 versions was however testimony that the long term succeeding concept was indeed Audi's 4x4 turbo route. Nevertheless, the Lancia Rally 037 Evo was a hugely exciting car. The main difference has been that the engine capacity had increased from a "normal" 2000cc to a 2111cc, such being much closer to the limit of the weight class (x1.4=2955cc rather than 2793cc, the limit being 3000cc). But what was really a genius move to give the car more destinct and spectacular looks was to simply remove the rear bumper. Imagine: Following this car, all you would see from its rear is 2 huge mud flaps with an exhaust pipe and a gearbox in between! A machine on wheels!
