Indeed Suzuki's first works effort in the WRC dates back to 1986. It was low scale but already run and driven by Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima, who is now Suzuki's motorsport boss. The Swift was a tiny A5 car, but since it had a 1298cc, 16v, injection engine, it was a good package for the up to 1300cc category. It was rare in those days to have a 16v and/or injection engine with such small displacement. Accordingly it was often seen as a privateer car, i.e. in the hands of Mark Higgins.
