Lancia Delta General Information

This is it, the most successful rally car of all time!

Of course to the success story of the Lancia Delta groupA it helped that groupA meant 5,000 road cars within 12 months. The FIA thought this is the end of homologation specials, turning rally cars into a more road related item again. This in itself is actually an attempt that should be strongly applauded. However car manufacturers, mainly Peugeot, feared that these new rules might as well mean a homologation special and its evolutions now has to be sold 5,000 times and if somebody was prepared to do that, it will turn this sport more expensive than ever before because you could only win if you kept producing 5,000 rather than 20 homologation specials year in year out. And this is exactly what Lancia did!

So no wonder they were unbeatable. On the other hand, if we look at it from a Lancia point of view, it is Lancia who should be applauded. Yes, with Lancia being prepared to go that 5,000 homologation specials per year route, this destroyed the competition in early groupA. On the other hand, Lancia extracted the maximum from the rules as they were, and that is exactly what every team manager will tell you this game is all about!

Plus there is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the Lancia Delta integrale was a superb base car. Because of the way things happened, there was no real comparison at the time, but as time moved on we had more 4x4 turbo cars of appropriate size. Look onto the road what we had, Escort Cosworth, Mazda 323 GT-X, Nissan Sunny GTI-R, Toyota Celicas, Audis, Volvos, Subarus, Mitsubishis over all these years, and still the Lancia Delta is regarded as one of the best 4x4 turbo cars that ever existed!

So the base product was as fine as could be. The gA Delta dominated rallying from the moment the new regulations came in charge. And what does Lancia do? They never ever leaned back, resting on their laurels. They didn't care what the opposition did, they didn't care how far ahead they were of everybody. When technology moved on, when there was a tiny chance to improve the car, they did just that! The motivation, the will to win, it couldn't have been bigger if they had to find one tenth of a second to turn a first time winner.

But once more, let's not forget that the car itself was mega. Some might wonder, as the Delta is officially recognised as the car with the most WRC wins, why the Delta has all its victories added up when i.e. the Toyota Celicas of the time haven't. Well, in the same time this generation Lancia Delta was on the market, Toyota went through 4 entirely different generations Celica road cars to base their rally cars on and they still struggled to catch the old Lancia! The Lancia Delta in its 1st generation (Type 831) was built 14 years, 1979-1993! Indeed, when the groupA Delta debuted in January 1987, its base road car was a 7 years old design already! It had the perfect size, somewhere between B- and C-segment, short overhangs, boxy aka easy to overview its corners. And strangely when the groupA future was decided mid 1986 the car was available since a while as a FWD 1.6 turbo, but in time for 1987, never mind the basic design was already 7 years old, they simply made a 4x4 2.0 turbo!

And what a design. Simple, boxy, functional, yet somehow beautiful. It really is a master example of what makes car design so fascinating. This Lancia Delta was boxy, straight, simple, yet recognizable. And maybe timeless. But what was fascinating was that, to be honest, the FWD Delta 1.6 turbo with its rectangular headlights already looked old fashioned and boring in 1986. The 4WD & integrale versions always had round twin headlights. The last evolution of 1992 had these twin headlights in a slightly different shape, a big bulge in the bonnet, big wheel arches - now it was another 6 years further on, its 13th production year, and somehow this Delta with only these tiny changes did not look old fashioned any more at all. The Delta's most successful years were 1988 & 1989, so this evolution rallied in 1992 & 1993 wasn't even the most successful variation. Yet it had such a strong and convincing presence that by fans it was nick named the Deltona, a name that became famous not only with Lancia fans.

Sadly this model Lancia Delta was discontinued in 1993. Although there was a replacement (basically a hatchback version of the long forgotten Lancia Dedra saloon car), it wasn't quite the same and so Lancia saw not much option but stop their rally program. It is a sad case of a car manufacturer going down despite big rally successes. Mother Fiat SpA had a problem here. Well, maybe it is in the eye of the observer, but I thought in character that last, beautiful Deltona had a lot of the Alfa character. At the time Lancia also sold their big saloon as a Thema 8.32 = another car with "driving machine" interior and, no kidding, with a Ferrari V8 engine! However there was no room within Fiat SpA for 2 brands with the Alfa character, with sales proving this was more niche than mass market. So Fiat decided to move Lancia into luxury. Best example, the modern day Delta as launched in 2008 is a big, curvy, luxurious design. And while in Italy it is a Lancia Delta, in some markets as the UK it is sold as the Chrysler Delta, and somehow the Chrysler name seems to suit its size and shape better. Although it is far from a bad car, it is hard to imagine this 2008 Chrysler Delta is the successor of this boxy driving machine most successful rally car in history! I may add one can probably understand why Fiat SpA tried to lift Lancia very clearly away from Alfa character, but Lancia sales surely have been better when they still rallied that Delta, so in the end Lancia today is only a sad shadow of Lancia the World Rally Champions.

Back to the 1979-1993 Delta design, as a more positive conclusion to the story of the most successful rally car: From outside it may have been a timeless design, as explained already. But above all, as a car fan I have sat in many cars in my life, but the road going Delta (even though an earlier integrale version, I think it was from 1988) impressed me forever. Dashboard full of dials, alcantara covered Recaro seats, the pedals all on one level like being made for left foot braking. I mean the seats, the dials, the switches, it was impossible to get into this car and not feel in perfect position for all the controls. But the pedals as only one detail maybe are the perfect example: On about every car I ever drove, for whatever reason you have to really lift your right foot to get from power onto the brakes, as if car designers wanted you to crash. Similar with the clutch. The Lancia Delta asked for the tiniest twist on your heel, as if the pedals already on the road car were designed with easy left foot braking on mind! Absolutely every interior detail made me feel at home immediately in not simply a car but a true, perfect driving machine!!!!

In the end alone the groupA Delta managed 46 WRC victories, too many to pick one that was outstanding. - A late update, just to show how good this car was: we are now 25 years further on, had at least a decade of only 2 manufacturers taking part and Sébastien Loeb dominating, and the result: Citroen C4 WRC = 36 wins, Citroen Xsara T4 = 32 wins, Ford Focus Mk2 = 27 wins = the Lancia Delta still tops them all by a big margin! Oh, and did I not mention this car won Lancia 6 manufacturer World Championships in a row? Early groupA and the biggest drivers squad may have helped, but 6 World Championships with the same model of car, a car that at the start of its competition career was already 7 years old!
