A showcase of French fun car engineering, the R5 GT Turbo was well loved with privateers and it's results were so amazing that estimates and rumours consistently claimed it had something between 150BHP and 185BHP! The road car only had 115BHP and the estimated figures were likely the product of jealous opposition, as they would have been very much illegal in group N. Even some lieu way for production tolerances allowed, anything beyond 127BHP would no doubt have led to a public homologation scandal. Although it is interesting that there never was a groupA version of this so famous and successful groupN car. The secret of the R5 GT Turbo was far more in the typical French fun handling, the car was super nippy and light, it combined amazing traction with direct and crisp steering and a healthy dose of permanent, easy to control oversteer. The same could be claimed of cars like Peugeot 205 GTI, Talbot Samba Rallye, Citroen AX, the later Renault Clio, which were all surprisingly competitive cars. What made the R5 GT Turbo stand out from these was that it had a turbo engine. Such it delivered superior torque compared to the other French hotties and had unique engine characteristics.
Indeed the little 1397cc R5 was such nippy and turbo-efficient, it could seriously trouble the Cosworths and Deltas of the group N World. Outstanding reliability had its share of this as well. The R5 GT Turbo won two group N World championships and on the Bandama Rallye 1989 it (6876 SS 84) became the only group N car ever to win a WRC event outright! And it did so over 3 hours ahead of the 2nd placed group A Mitsubishi!
