Peugeot 309 General Information

For the privateers, and especially in groupN, the 205 GTI was a far more famous car than the 309 GTI. Yet, the 309 GTI was potentially the better performer. This sounds strange, is the 309 the bigger and heavier car, but exactly that comes to its advantage. We explain this phenomenon in length in the 309 gA chapter. Nevertheless, this phenomenon is probably best proven with results. The results for the groupN 205 were not bad (again, see the according chapter), but the best overall result was that of a young Andrea Aghini finishing 12th overall and winning groupN on the 1988 Rally San Remo. And that was a Peugeot 309 GTI 1.9. In the 205 groupN chapter you might not have believed that a groupN 205 could beat the likes of Pascal Gaban and Gregoire de Mevius in Mazda 323 4WD Turbos. In 1988 Pascal Gaban became the groupN World Champion, but in San Remo that year, you find on the results lists that Aghini's agile Peugeot 309 GTI 1.9 beat Gaban's Mazda 323 4WD Turbo by a full 10 minutes!

Still, in groupN the 309 only became famous when a limited edition was launched in 1990, the 309 GTI16. A good groupN 309 GTI16 has up to 177BHP, that is as much as a full groupA 205 or 309 has with the 8 valves engine! And in France the Peugeot Challenge swapped to the groupN 309 GTI16 and a certain Gilles Panizzi was good enough for top10 results with that beast, yes as a groupN! Indeed, already in road trim the Peugeot 309 GTI16 is much hotter than you would dare to believe. In the power to weight ratio the Peugeot 309 GTI16 beats a BMW M3 of that time by quite a margin!
