Mitsubishi Galant General Information

When groupA arrived, we soon had such a Lancia dominance that everybody was waiting for a competitor who could challenge Lancia. Toyota was the first, starting from Tour de Corse 1988. But they had a difficult start and Lancia already a big gap. The next hopes came from two Japanese manufacturers that somehow are tempting to compare. Mitsubishi debuted a car on the RAC 1988 and Subaru on the Safari 1990. Both were makes with virtually no rally heritage and both launched cars that featured 4x4 and turbo, but were of a size unseen in rallying before. The Galant VR4 and the Legacy RS were both long and heavy saloons and came from a base car category so rare for rallying that even nowadays it seems weird and out of place when people complain 'rallying should be for saloons and not hot hatches'!
(Well, at least in the earlier days of Rallye-info, on our forums this was a favourite excuse by Mitsubishi and more even Subaru fans when Peugeot came beating them with the 206 WRC. But if you look a bit further back in history, it was Mitsubishi and Subaru arriving here with cars that in size didn't really make sense. Honestly I even liked the Galant and the Legacy, just, sorry, I couldn't help such excuse hurting my heart, rallying always belonged to cars as the Delta, 205, Mini, if the Japanese decide to join the fun with a big saloon, it's not Peugeot's or Lancia's fault, is it?)

As a model of car the Galant is interesting, yet hard to pin down. In around 1980 Mitsubishi started to actually do really nice, straight designs, see Lancer EX and the facelifted version of the Galant Sigma alongside its Sapporo coupé. But in 1984 somehow came a nonsense Galant Eterna, the first FWD Galant and much larger with huge overhangs and therefore somehow silly yet with no character. It didn't live long, already in late 1987 came this Galant we cover here as yet another completely new design, still very large, but strange, seemingly inwards curved side panels, non-aerodynamic front and as well inwards shaped, very large rear lights made this car a unique sight without really being ugly. Not beautiful either, but a strangely interesting car. Maybe, since I compare it to the first Subaru Legacy, both had with large rear lights over near the complete width a bit of a US style with strong presence, but the strange inwards curved design scheme made the Galant look posher, even if more stocky, than the Legacy.

But in rallying the Galant VR4 was really an effort to behold. Mitsubishi previously had promising cars but never ran them properly. Well, at least the Lancer 2000 Turbo (EX) of 1981 fits that claim, very good and interesting car developed for no program at all. At the RAC 1988 they arrived with the big Galant. They hired none less than Ari Vatanen to drive it, the car featured a 4x4 system and an engine that was seriously developped and this is the only groupA car to date that featured 4 wheel steering - Mitsubishi definitely meant business!

However the Galant VR4 debut was troublesome, as this car's entire career was a weird one. On the RAC 1988 Ari Vatanen had masses of problems, the engine lost power and the 4 wheel steering showed potential to become the WRC's laughing stock as power steering and suspension problems had Vatanen operating the steering wheel in the forests like a 90 year old granny on a Tesco car park. Come Monte Carlo 1989 and the problems for Ari continued, as he eventually was listed 87th. For Ari Vatanen a maximum nightmare season unfolded. Vatanen superstar as Mitsubishi's permanent driver, his best result in 1989 should be a 5th place. How weird the contrast when Mitsubishi decided to drag in guest drivers, all of them for one-off appearences: Jimmy McRae came 4th in the Acropolis. Mikael Ericsson had just been sacked by the dominating Lancia team for his lack of results, when in his only rally ever in a Mitsubishi he won the 1000 Lakes! And a few months later on the RAC Mitsubishi decided to call on the former Vauxhall Chevette and Rothmans Escort star Pentti Airikkala, who hasn't had a WRC program since 8 years and Pentti took his one and only victory at WRC level on this, his 'comeback'! Just how to compare to modern dull times? Imagine bringing back Gigi Galli today in some form of Volvo and have him beat all the Ogiers and Loebs first try!

Remember, this RAC 1989 was the Galant's only 5th WRC event and the car already collected 2 wins with drivers that would have earned you millions at the betting offices! And just as strangely, Kenneth Eriksson's 1991 Swedish win aside, a works-Galant should never win again! The Galant VR4 also won the ERC 1992 with Erwin Weber, but at WRC level, despite the curiously successful debut season, the 1988/1989 Vatanen fate should become more the norm for this car. Indeed Vatanen was so unlucky in this car, that for 1991 Mitsubishi replaced him for Timo Salonen, who found his luck in this car bad enough to end his career! If so, explain the Jimmy McRae, Mikael Ericsson, Pentti Airikkala successes in their first ever drives in this car.

If there ever was a car that made you wonder 'how good is it really', the Galant VR4 should be it. Well, how good is a car that makes acknowledged World class stars look pathetic while at the same time it gives victories to several "nobodies"?
