Renault-Alpine A110 General Information

Alpine was a Renault daughter company, like i.e. Cosworth to Ford. The A110 was an exciting and well loved sports coupé based on Renault technology. It used mostly the Renault R16 TS engine in the rear engine rear wheel drive layout known from cars like the Renault Dauphine, R8 or R10, all that in a super lightweight tubular frame plastic shell.

It is easy to see why this car became such a success. In fact this car was a typical French trick of the 1960/70s. It was mass product technology with a lightweight custom plastic shell. Similar was done i.e. by a company called Ligier. Yes the F1 manufacturers produced a small, light, plastic shell sporty road car that used items from all sorts of shelves - as one example rear lights from the Peugeot 504 Coupé and engine from the Citroen SM.

So what we had in the Alpine was an extremely light plastic sports car with Renault mass produced technology of which many parts and know how was available. Further already in 1965 an Alpine A106 arrived. Then a slightly bigger facelift the A108. And soon the A110. From now on Alpine concentrated on engine size growing from 1000cc to 1800cc over the years.

Indeed the A110 rallied from the beginning and already won the Alpine Rallye 1968 (From Marseilles through Italy, Austria, Switzerland back to Marseilles and not even a coinciding name, the brand was named after that rally!). This means when the WRC started in 1973, Renault was alongside Lancia and Fiat the only manufacturer to fight for the titles. But other than their opposition Renault-Alpine had a car that was winning rallies since 5years, hence was extremely well developed at this point.

For all this it may have been not too big a surprise this A110 won the first WRC event ever and the first WRC title ever. Still, if you look at their results and selection of drivers, it was a big scale effort that deserves all credit!
