Volkswagen Golf (3) General Information

There was hardly a comparison between the Golf 3 and previous Golf versions in rallying. The car was to turn a kit car and was mainly developped by SBG in Britain rather than Volkswagen themselves, although there was enough support from Volkswagen in Germany to consider it a works car - well, if Prodrive builds works Subarus, then SBG built works Volkswagens. Plus the motorsport boss of Volkswagen UK actually had his desk in SBG's offices at the time. So even not German run, this is very clearly a works effort. The Golf 3 debuted on the RAC in 1993 in the hands of Jimmy McRae and in following seasons drivers as excellent as Sebastian Lindholm, Tapio Laukkanen and Alister McRae got their hands on the Golf 3 Kit Car. However, despite this driver choice, there seemed a constant lack of results. The Golf 3 was never outstandingly reliable in any single area and some people wondered if the claimed 285BHP was determined by throwing a dice (though RAC 93 with Jimmy McRae and early BRC 94 with Sebastian Lindholm was not yet the full kit car with a then claimed 220BHP groupA engine). This power would have had the car very much in the league of the Renault Maxi Mégane and Peugeot 306 Maxi, but whenever these opponents met, the difference was often counted in minutes. And that even on gravel, like in Portugal 1998, where Adruzilo Lopes' asphalt specialist 306 Maxi beat the leading Golf by 15 minutes! The works team's main program alongside WRC was the BRC, but again for lack of performance and reliability the team could never win the title in 6 years of trying. Still the Golf 3 Kit Car was by most thought to be a big number in Britain and Sweden, and there was no lack of trying at WRC level!

Sorry, this seems a short write up considering the author even worked for this team at the time. But somehow it was a typical VW Golf, designed not to offend the masses and in the end somehow lacking character, while in this case performance and reliability didn't help for it to stand out either.
