Seat Ibiza General Information

It somehow seems hard to write much about the Seat Ibiza Kit Car. The successes were there aplenty, but is it me or did this car somehow lack in character?

This may be a surprising claim for a car that won the F2 World title 3 years running. It was the first serious rally project for Seat since decades and it was good enough to convince Seat into a proper WRCar project!

But somehow the car had no outstanding qualities. Sorry, this is not to say it is a bad car, far from it. It was a superb alrounder, one of the more capable F2 cars on gravel. Yet it neither looked the most exciting, nor did it have the widest/wildest body kit, nor did it have the most powerful engine, nor did it have the best suspension travel. The Seat Ibiza Kit Car claims no superlatives, but more importantly in this case it also certainly had no major flaws, making it a good overall package. Still, by now we know that Seat was maybe a little naive to believe their F2 titles would guarantee them success in the WRCar category as well. The Ibiza was nowhere near the pace of 306 Maxi and Xsara Kit Car, it only was competing more regularly. In F2 it may have had the measure of the Hyundai Coupé and it may be a strong competition of the Volkswagen Golf and Opel Astra. But despite the successes at World level, the Seat Ibiza could not deliver the same type of results on national championships, where it found more regular competition.

The project also started off very slowly. The Ibiza debuted in the Rally Catalunya 1994 (though not in its final version), where it neither had the pace, nor the reliability. However drivers were Antonio Rius and Jordi Ventura, making Erwin Weber their only experienced driver with previous international results. Its only full WRC appearance in 1995 was Portugal, where Erwin Weber was nowhere near the pace of Deila's non-Kit Car(!) 306 S16 and the Astras of Loix and Sperrer. Weber was 22nd on that occasion, which considering the low works competition of the mid 1990s was a laughable result. But through 1996 you could see a steady improvement: Argentina 19th, Australia 16th and by Catalunya both cars were very close to the top10 indeed. In 1997 Harri Rovanperä joined the team and he turned out to be an absolute super star not only in this car! We still have to say that results are washed down by a very low overall competition at WRC level, but 6 top10 overall finishes and 5 F2 wins in a row for Harri Rovanperä is a superb record. In 1998 general competition started to become more decent again, top10 overall results became rare now for the F2 Seat, but Harri's 5th place in the Safari was sensational!

During that year Seat's WRCar arrived and the "no-flaws but no-character" Ibiza disappeared from the F2 scene surprisingly quickly. Today you still find some 306 Maxi and Maxi Mégane at national rallies, but a Seat?
