Opel Commodore (B) General Information

The big Opel Commodore was generally an upmarket version to the Opel Rekord and in this (Rekord D) generation it was even available as a 2-door. This in itself seems a curiousity, today it would be unthinkable to sell larger cars as 2-door at all, yet Rekord and Commodore were even available in 2 different 2-door versions! Still, it seems an unlikely rally car, never had any big successes either, but this car was used in the early part of the careers of Walter Röhrl and Jean Ragnotti. Jean Ragnotti was actually a Commodore A before 1973 in French events, though this Commodore B you find in France a lot too with Henry Gréder and Marie-Claude Beaumont. But if you find Röhrl in Monte Carlo 1973 in 45th place, well young Röhrl shocked the rally world driving this group1 (like road version) car into the top10 overall until complete brake failure throughout the last leg and an off to come with it moved him well down the order.

Mind you, the main reason to cover this car here may be Walter Röhrl, but it was generally a very interesting car! And in a maybe surprising marketing contrast to Manta vs Ascona: Don’t think of the Commodore as a coupé version to the Rekord! The Commodore (A) was first launched as an upmarket version to the Rekord when the Rekord was in it’s C generation, and both, Rekord & Commodore, were available as 4-door and 2-door saloon and 2-door coupé. In the generation we cover here, Rekord D & Commodore B, both were again available as a 4-door and 2-door saloon and 2-door coupé, but in difference to the previous generation this was not such a distinct coupé shape, you had to look closely on the C-pillar to not mistake the coupés for their 2-door saloon sisters. The Commodore C as the upmarket Record E was the last Commodore and in this generation the coupé version was dropped completely. Apart from some posh details, the Commodore versions always had straight 6-cylinder engines, in the B generation with 2.5 or 2.8L of which the larger engine was rallied. This makes it tempting to compare the Commodore to the Ford Capri, that was also a prominent group1 rally car with (V)6-cylinder engines. In engines, power and RWD it was interesting to compare the cars, but the Capri was an independent sports coupé while the Commodore, even as a coupé, had a totally different character and appearance, being visibly a lifestyle posh coupé rather than anything sporty.
