Renault Mégane (1) General Information

The Renault Maxi Mégane is an exciting car. For the Renault works team it was a replacement to the Clio Maxi. Even though Renault originally brew the F2 Kit Car idea and the Clio was the first such kit car, the Clio Maxi struggled against its bigger and more powerfull French opposition, namely Peugeot 306 Maxi and Citroën Xsara Kit Car. That's why the Maxi Mégane was created. But the Mégane would not beat the Clio everywhere.

Work was mainly carried out on the engine. In BHP the Renault Maxi Mégane was still not quite up with Peugeot 306 Maxi and Citroen Xsara Kit Car. However the Maxi Mégane would be much more powerful than the Clio Maxi. Even the configuration of engine internals has completely changed, see bore x stroke figures.

Further it is in the nature of the Mégane Coupé base model, that it has a longer wheel base and a lower centre of weight than the Clio. In total contrast to every other French F2 kit car, including everything that Peugeot and Citroën made, this made the Mégane quite a good, stable car on the rough and even on gravel. It would beat the Clio Maxi hands down in those conditions. Indeed the Maxi Mégane turned a major success in the British Rally Championship, where it won manufacturer and driver titles in 1998 (Martin Rowe) & 1999 (Tapio Laukkanen). Interestingly the BRC was a major program for Renault. Although they already were in the BRC earlier with Clio models run by satellite team Automeca, for the Mégane program they even employed British former star navigator Terry Harryman as the program manager! This even went so far that - again unusual for a French manufacturer and especially Renault - in 1998 & 1999 the BRC was Renault's main program, while at home in France the Renault stars Bugalski moved on to Citroën after 1997 with Ragnotti and Jordan pretty much ending their careers at the same time.

However for privateers F2 cars simply would be the more interesting purchase for asphalt rallying. And while the Mégane was also successful on asphalt, some of its clear advantages over the Clio would backfire right on asphalt rallies. On asphalt the longer wheel base and lower centre of weight means the Maxi Mégane should be better on fast, long straights and over bumps. But on narrow roads, tight corners, as found on Corsica or in village stages, the nervous Clio Maxi is the far more nimble and chuckable car and so even makes up for its BHP disadvantage.

Even the new for the Mégane F2 engine enhanced these different characters. The Mégane is less of a long stroke layout than the Clio, such the Mégane is more powerful, but also more peaky, the Clio has better low end pick up torque, enhancing the Clio's nippy style on twisty stages.

What we are saying with this is: The old Clio Maxi is not always at a disadvantage over the Maxi Mégane. The Maxi Mégane was not as much the answer to 306 Maxi and Xsara Kit Car as Renault hoped either. But it was not a wasted effort, far from it. In contrary, it is interesting that even today, many years after the F2 category died at WRC level, there are still plenty of Clio Maxi as well as Maxi Mégane in private hands. And where you find these cars, you often enough find stages where the Mégane is at a clear advantage and others where the Clio should be ahead. And both of these machines are even today good enough for the one or the other surprise.
