Ford Puma (Mk1) General Information

Lovely car! Admittedly not a car I would buy for myself, but a nice and way too rare idea for the younger generation to create a small budget coupé for the road. In fact, unfortunately the Puma didn’t seem to be the success Ford hoped it would be, since there only was 1 generation Puma and then the car disappeared again, when I would have loved to see more sporty, young, unique cars like that.

Anyway, the Ford Puma was one of the first S1600 cars ever created - and in fact the last Ford rallye car entirely developed in Boreham! It may have been based on the Fiesta platform, but looks like a proper coupé. And that certainly makes this Ford project stick out from all other S1600 projects. All manufacturers, if Citroën with the Saxo, Renault with the Clio, Fiat with the Punto, they all are small, budget hatchbacks more suited to Tesco car parks and therefore this sporty looking Ford Puma coupé is a very welcome change to the norm.

The car also saw serious development. In the early years of S1600 Ford supported the category strongly. 8-10 Pumas in the S1600/JWRC field was the norm, drivers as Martin Rowe and Francois Duval included. The test program was run by none other than 1984 WRChamp Stig Blomqvist, who even competed at WRC level with that car! 55years old junior, eh?

It is hard to pin down why this car never won a JWRC title. Maybe because Ford’s main attention was the big Focus WRC program. And also the French S1600 cars, especially the Citroën Saxo and Renault Clio, just seemed too good for whatever opposition. Well, the Ford Puma has not done worse than the army of Fiat Punto and certainly not worse than Suzuki’s multi year full works efforts with even 3 different models at JWRC level.

Nearly forgot to say it’s name tag “Puma SRC” needs some explaination. Most people referred to it as the Puma S1600 or the Puma Kit Car, simply because virtually all other manufacturers do not seem to have any fantasy to give their rally cars unique names. Ford called the car the Puma SRC. In reference to WRC meaning World Rally Car, Ford saw the Super1600 category Puma SRC as a Super Rally Car.
