May we please refer you to the Peugeot 106 Maxi story for this. Not only that the Citroën Saxo and Peugeot 106 are closely related cars on the road and as rally cars. Of both there were similar rally versions and programs as well. The 106 Maxi story includes some background explaining the difference between F2 and S1600.
You will find that we have 3 different group A based Citroën Saxo in this database. The normal group A Saxo VTS was often a Citroën Cup car from their one-makes-series. Such is was not even full group A, while the body would look standard, as in line with normal group A. Then we had the F2 Citroën Saxo Kit Car. This had all the full F2 body kit, like the Peugeot 106 Maxi. This car was mainly used in France by quite a selcetion of drivers, but also Niall McShea delivered a few very spectacular drives in one in the UK. This F2 car was created before the S1600 category even existed. Never mind the Saxo always was a 1600cc car, Citroën fancied the kit car rules and turned their Saxo into one nevertheless. When the S1600 category started, these S1600 rules did not allow quite as much freedom as the F2 rules. From the body kit the S1600 and F2 Saxos looked absolutely identical. But the S1600 Saxo had some lesser tuned engine auxiliaries and a less sophisticated sequential gearbox.
The Saxo turned the dominating car in the early S1600/JWRC category at WRC level. In 2001 Sebastien Loeb won every S1600 event he started! In Monte Carlo 2002, Citroën experimented with a new clutch. The experiment was an emberrassement, as on this event all Saxos would retire in the very first stage with a slipping clutch! Sven Haaf somehow made it through, but he also would have to give up with the same problem before he reached first service. But this was the one and only flaw in a superb career of this car. Actually the Saxo S1600 story is not finished yet. Sven Haaf had a comeback to rallying in 2004 and won the German S1600 title in a most dominating manner.
