Renault Clio (2) General Information

Renault is back once more. Renault - we are talking one of the most innovative manufacturers in the WRC history. They were the first WRC champions ever, taking their Alpine A110 model to the makes title in the WRC debut season 1973. Renault invented the supercars, when the brutal, mid-engined R5 Turbo debuted BEFORE the famous Audi Quattro. When the FIA invented the kit car idea for the first time with the F2 category, the F2 Kit Car idea was actually born and bread at Renault and the Clio Maxi was the first proper Kit Car.

S1600 and JWRC was however slightly different. Renault did not invent that category. Right in contrary, despite the concept similarities of S1600 Kit Cars and F2 Kit Cars, Renault was actually one of the last manufacturers creating such S1600 kit car and joining the JWRC! But one thing would never change at Renault. This was yet another Renault rallye car that was a winner straight out of the box!

A look back at the various JWRC seasons shows the difference between a truly good and a maybe somewhat blindfolded manufacturer. Despite S1600 never being a big number in French Championship rallying, the most official Clio S1600 cars were found in the FRC. The spirit of the JWRC dictates that no real manufacturer involvement should be there. That is why the Renault Clio always was a rare sight in the JWRC. This is in stark contrast to Suzuki, who never even made an effort to hide their works involvement. Between 6 to 8 works supported Suzuki every year in the JWRC was and is the norm. How funny then that Suzuki only managed one JWRC title in many years of trying with a whole army of works cars? At the same time the titles were shared between Citroën and Renault, despite both of them entering the series at a far lower schale. How can that success be, if the cars are not simply superior?

Show cases of this daring - if not even for Suzuki (and in similar line Hyundai & Seat) fans rude - claim are the JWRC 2003: permanent works Suzuki drivers were Daniel Carlsson, Ville-Pertti Teuronen, Salvador Canellas & Urmo Aava, all capable drivers. There was only one single Renault, that of Brice Tirabassi, and he took the title!
2006 a similar showcase. Permanent works Suzuki drivers included Per-Gunnar Andersson, Guy Wilks, Urmo Aava, Jan Mölder, again there was only one Renault entry, that of even then completely unknown Swede Patrick Sandell, who duely won the titel against all the Suzuki's.

For me this is a nice showcase of a truly good manufacturer vs a somewhat blindfolded manufacturer. This is written mid 2007 - note: before we see the result of my claim. At this point I would bet Suzuki's WRCar project from next year (2008) being a disaster, just like ex-F2 runners Seat and Hyundai was full WRC disaster! I would bet the same if Renault would built a WRCar, they would be fighting for the championship first season!

Note once more, the above text was written mid 2007, how did I know what would happen to the Suzuki WRCar project? I wish Renault would try it, that would be great!
