The Citroën C2 replaced the Saxo on the road. It was an interesting, if not unusual change for a road car. In modern globalisation it only makes perfect sense that PSA lets their brands Peugeot & Citroën move closer together. Citroën used Peugeot platforms and Peugeot engines for decades. Interesting however that the Citroën Saxo was a very long serving car that on closer looks shows a very strong relation to the Peugeot 106. However now Citroën replaced the Saxo with 2 cars that in design show no relation to any Peugeot. The C3 is the 5-door replacement to the Saxo. The C2 is the 3-door replacement. Both cars have an independant design and unusually for modern times the C2 is actually clearly shorter than the car it replaced.
Still, following the road car change, it only made sense that on the rally stages the C2 replaced the no more marketed Saxo model too. And it is a worthy successor, even though with its shorter wheelbase it should be more nervous.
After Sébastien Loeb helped as the development and test driver, the C2 Kit Car for JWRC rallying debuted in Rallye Deutschland 2004 with German star Sven Haaf. Sven was a pace setter in the category on the C2 debut until he retired with an electronics problem on the rough Panzerplatte stage. However the mark was done. The C2's first full season in the JWRC was 2005. Carlos Sainz's prodegee Daniel Sordo was one of the drivers, while Opel Corsa regular Kris Meeke also changed to the new Citroën. As usual there was an army of Suzuki works cars in the JWRC, but the pair of new Citroën C2 took 1st & 3rd places in the championship! Sordo even took a dominant title, he won 4 events in his 7 starts. Meeke gave Citroën a 5th victory in the 8-round championship. Suzuki in comparison entered 6 cars and only won 2 events all season, poorly supported events at that.
