Renault Clio (2) General Information

Renault has a long tradition in rallying with standard/budget form little B-segment cars with superb handling and potent engines. We remember the amazing R5 GT Turbo and of course the 2.0 litre 1st generation Clio Williams. Everything else but to let this tradition live on would have been a sin. How serious Renault is with rallying and tradition is proved by this car's name. If the Clio Williams already had a resounding name, however in reference to an F1 team, this one was even better: Clio Ragnotti!

You could of course look up in our database who Ragnotti is. Though I must say it. Jean Ragnotti is a stuntman for his original profession and then became one of the funniest characters the rally world has ever seen. Ragnotti made himself a name with the mid-engined super car R5 Turbo, in which he won 3 WRC events. But Jeannot, little John as the French call him, was even more stuntman in the French championship with FWD groupA Clio Williams and F2 Clio Maxi. He competed until the late 1990s and even today he is seen as a course opening car driver or Renault test driver. The launch of the Renault Clio Ragnotti makes Jean Ragnotti truly a rare living legend! More even, Ragnotti has spent virtually his entire career at Renault, nice to see Renault as a manufacturer rewards this loyalty.

To think the Renault Clio Ragnotti is a homologation special is however maybe overhyping things a little. As said Renault has a tradition of powerful, nimble B-segment cars. The Renault Clio RS is on most markets known as the top version of the 2nd generation Clio. The little Clio RS already has a 2.0 litre engine with 172BHP. Indeed the Clio Ragnotti is based on the Clio RS and nothing has been done to the already powerful engine. More to the point, the Clio Ragnotti has seen mild equipment changes, mainly for weight saving and to a smaller degree some fine tuning. In a way comparable to what Peugeot did to 205, 106 & 306 models with the "Rallye" version tag. Only 172BHP in a small Clio is a very promising base, and the Clio Ragnotti is only officially sold in France.

In rallying it is also near exclusively seen in the French Championship. WRC entries are the exception. Still, superb package, light car, the Clio was always one of the best handling cars ever, on asphalt stages it is a serious threat to Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and Subaru Impreza WRX! In fact on French championship asphalt rallies the well sorted Clio Ragnotti lately became a multiple groupN winner, never mind Mitsubishis and Subarus!
