Ford Fiesta (Mk5) General Information

Ford did the perfect thing with this Fiesta in regards to private budget talents and in going with modern times, yet they somehow had ill fortune with their idea. Basically in its brand new 5th generation shell the Fiesta all the sudden was a grown up car with a top engine of 2.0 litre. When previous Fiesta models could be regarded as an A-segment car for which a 1.6 engine was much, this Fiesta Mk5 was nearly in line with what the Escort once used to be. Unfortunately the Fiesta Mk5 also built rather high, nearly like an SUV, a trend that thankfully was reversed again with the Fiesta Mk6 and a trend that looked questionable as well for in S1600 the Fiesta Mk5 replaced the small coupé model Puma. Nevertheless the grown Fiesta seemed a brilliant idea for a 2.0 litre budget rally car base. And interestingly the car debuted as a course opening car on Rally Finland 2005, driven by Finnish F1 driver Mika Salo!

Curiously Ford already developped and debuted an S1600 kit car version of the Fiesta Mk5, only to discover what was predictable: S1600 kit cars became too expensive for too little return and the JuniorWRC had a problem. This is why the Fiesta S1600 remained a very rare car with no worthy records. Ford reacted perfectly right and created this 2000cc FWD groupN car. They even got the FIA to give permission to run these cars within the JuniorWRC. Of course a basically all standard road going class N3 car would struggle to get any decent results against kit cars that feature a fully tuned engine, wide body kit and a sequential transmission. Ford addressed this problem in doing a separate inofficial classification for groupN Fiestas within each JWRC event from 2006 and give the fastest Fiesta driver a cash prize. It is like a championship within a championship. And with a budget car that also was not insane in the running cost and with a possible cash prize, the groupN Fiesta - and not at all the S1600 Fiesta - turned a common sight in the JWRC.

Why this was ill fortune for Ford? Because the FIA has realised the exact same problem and as a result created the R3 class and allowed these into the JWRC, too. R3 means basically de-tuned groupA cars up to 2000cc. These cars also cost about 1/3rd of an S1600 kit car, but were just as quick! Since R3 are 2000cc gA- cars competing this 2000cc gN Fiesta, the Fiesta can't beat these cars either.

Bad luck, it is so praiseworthy Ford had that idea, but if they only had waited one more year they could have had an affordable JWRC winner. As it stands at the moment of writing this, the groupN Fiesta is a capable and interesting car and Ford shows little interest in creating an R3 Fiesta, which would mean developing a 3rd entirely different competition car in only 3 years on the same base and for the same target.
