The Audi 80 Quattro was created as a group A rally car for private/amateur rally drivers. As a small saloon car with an uncomplicated engine and 4 wheel drive this certainly was a good idea at the time and many privateers got surprising results with it.
But there was one hysterical tale that would indicate that even Audi themselves were surprised just how good this car was: For 1983 Stig Blomqvist was new to the team (Stig only had guest appearences at Audi in 1982, when his priority was a Talbot BRC program). Audi wanted to throw all their weight behind Hannu Mikkola taking the 1983 drivers title and it was clear that Stig was going to be Hannu's main threat along the Lancia drivers and team orders would have to be applied on occasions. But for Sweden 1983 (where Lancia didn't start) apparently part of Audi's idea was slowing Stig down from being Hannu's threat, when they gave him the experimental group A 80 Quattro (On this one occasion actually entered as group B, but solely for the necessary production numbers had not been reached yet.). This genius plan nearly failed: Absolutely incredible, but Stig in the group A 80 Quattro crossed the finish line 2nd, only 47 seconds behind Hannu in the proven and nearly twice as powerful group B Quattro!!!!
