The car is still new, only interim story for now.
The new category and series is promising! Since nearly 2 decades Honda had a very powerful but only FWD base car that was by many privateers used mostly in groupN. But never ever had Honda in the slightest shown an interest in rallying. Now we have the new R-classes that give potential for good results for 2WD cars at a controllable budged. At the same time the IRC is created, which is only 9 rounds but consists of a selection of truly unique events in marketable locations. Like this the IRC spells a better value for money than the WRC. And all the very sudden we have a Honda works team!!!!
It seems small scale for it is not a 4x4 turbo car in the World championship and it is not run by Honda themselves. Italian Honda touring car specialists JAS Motorsport prepare and run the cars, but indeed all with the blessing of the Honda brand itself!
Until now old Honda Civic models with their traditional V-Tec (variable valve timing) were powerful high revving screamers with reliability issues. Now we have the striking new (FN) design Honda Civic, that also in comparison to previous versions features a 2.0 rather than a 1.6 engine, with 201BHP standard. Unfortunately on the first IRC rallies this brand new Honda Civic still seems very unreliable. But wait and see. Or actually one has to feel sorry for the new enthusiastic team. They have created an R3 class FWD car that on the first IRC events always was good for top10 stage times, move themselves into very interesting overall positions as the day goes on, but why is it always the last stage the mechanical gremmlins come in and spoil it all?
