Subaru Impreza (S14) General Information

Somehow it seems difficult to write about this car. It is still a fairly new car with many expectations, so normally I would wait a little to collect material and results. But wait what for, its career as a works WRCar is finished! This would probably indicate that it was not even what Subaru expected.

However this even I, formerly extremely unsatisfied Subaru customer, would have to relative (not trying to be biased, but enhancing the good points). This is the first new generation Impreza since 2001, not just a facelift, but kind of a revolution for Subaru. A hatchback usually means more functional, more compact, lighter. When a hatchback Impreza WRX was announced, despite earlier experiences, even I would have considered it as my next realistic dream car. But when I first saw it in the flash, something was wrong with it first sight (and I believe for once even Subaru fans will agree with me). Until now Subaru's were cars, in design you could like them or hate them, but they had huge character. This one however, if you even noticed it, could easily pass off as a Nissan or a Mazda, a memorable design it certainly has not. But the bigger problem for rallying, talking again from my view, I love and need a sporty car that is functional and can carry family to the holiday - wherever this is, as long as there are plenty of windy remote roads. So I don't want a tiny hatchback, but I also did not ask for a bus! The Impreza likely was never meant to be a C-segment car or smaller, but this is one of the biggest hatchbacks I can recall. Especially it builds high, a design that must destroy maybe Subaru's biggest layout advantage, the flat boxer engine allowing, apart from symmetrical 4x4, a low centre of gravity.

Maybe it was this that destroyed the balance of the Impreza. Technically it seems there wasn't that much new to its predecessor either. When on the 44S generation Impreza Petter Solberg's favourite complaint was indifferent handling, stage results seemed to prove that in handling as well as reliability this new Impreza was even a step into the wrong direction.

To be fair though, pinning this down as the only reason why Subaru pulled the plug on their WRC program after not even one full season with this new S14 hatchback, would be far from the full picture. What quite likely was the far bigger reason why Subaru lost hope in the future was repeated uncertainty created by the WRC rules makers about the technical future of the series. The only thing that seemed certain is that future WRCar rules could not be based on groupN cars but on S2000 cars, to which Subaru has no adequate base car, besides a potential no-turbo formula would contradict Subaru's niche and marketing. Even with turbos (also discussed S2000+Turbo), the whole principle of S2000 would not have been workable for Subaru. I.e. how do you fit a custom made transverse gearbox to a longitude boxer engine with symmetrical AWD?
