Fiat Grande Punto General Information

It can be doubted that this car will ever figure high in overall results, but it really writes history. Like with the Grande Punto S2000, Fiat again was first.

New are the groupA derivated R-classes in rallying. The biggest 2WD R-class should be the R3-class. Though after some fine tuning to the new classes the 3 stands more for the up to 2000cc engine capacity rather than the extend of tuning. Well, R3 has a little more freedom than R2, but especially here with the Fiat we have to go into the small letters behind: R3a up to 1400cc, R3b up to 1600cc (which is the top class for R2, there is no R2c), R3c up to 2000cc. However all these were non-turbo engines when modern road car reality proved the FIA went into the wrong direction here. Soon fine tuning brought two new, much needed R-classes, the R3T, which is a turbo, but with maximum 1600cc, and the R3D, which allows for 2000cc diesels, with or without turbo. The first R3T car was the Peugeot 207 RC that debuted late 2008. The Fiat Grande Punto JTD diesel however debuted as a rally car with special groupA permission already in the IRC Rallye San Remo 2007, before the R3D class became official!

This early debut is double interesting since the Grande Punto is an extremely good base car, as its S2000 results prove, and R-classes are a new and famous budget groupA idea, yet the only Grande Punto ever homologated into the R-classes is this R3D diesel!

What sounds like a new idea in today's alternative economic engine hype is actually quite old. It was 1980 when the Peugeot 505 Diesel Turbo managed a WRC top10 result that was never repeated for now 36 years. However the 505 managed this, the Fiat Grande Punto never came close to the top10 in any IRC round. However until then relatively unknown Marco Cavigioli managed to win the IRC 2WD Cup outright in 2008 in a Grande Punto JTD R3D! He was one of the only regular IRC entries on the 2008 China rally to claim this title, but he did so regularly fighting Alessandro Bettega in a works Honda Civic Type-R R3!
