Audi Coupé General Information

The Audi Coupé was not only a base to the group B Quattro, it was related to the Audi 80 saloon car, basically as the coupé version to the 80. Because of the Quattro's group B heritage and the 80's group 2 and later group A heritage it was only a question of time for the Coupé to be chosen by many privateers.

However the 4 wheel drive Quattro version of the Audi Coupé only arrived at the rally stages pretty late, after a 1985 face lift. Before that the group A Coupé was called GT and had FWD. The face lift could be identified mainly on the front grill, that was angled slightly aerodynamically in Audi 90 style (internal name B2 Typ85 rather than B2 Typ81). At the same time the engine cc went up from 2144cc to 2226cc. At the bottom line the Coupé GT and the Coupé Quattro could be easily mixed up, only under the skin they were quite different.

Maybe time for a few words generally on Audi's "B-cars", the 80, Coupé and Quattro range of those days: The 2nd generation 80, called B2, started as Typ81 already in 1978 and can be seen as the base of all cars mentioned here. The Ur-Quattro had wider wheel arches and was basically a homologation special. The Coupé had no wider wheel arches but also the twin headlight layout and the 2144cc 5-cylinder engines, however without turbo. If you see an Audi Coupé like that on the rally stages, with the twin headlights, it will be a Coupé GT and has ONLY FWD. Yet these existed, Audi Sweden entered a few such cars for example and Walter Smolej even drove a works registered example in Austria. However the combination of 4x4 in a group A Audi was only available in the 80 Quattro from 1983. Only in 1985 the Coupé Quattro really took to the stages, and that was only available after the 2nd generation's mid life facelift, called the B2 Typ85. At the same time a luxury version of the 80 became available, called the 90, and the Coupé can be regarded more in line with this upmarket 90. While the twin headlights disappeared and all Typ85 cars got a slightly more aerodynamic front, only the 90 and Coupé had the really wide headlights and only the 90 and Coupé got the 2226cc engine while the 80 kept the 2144cc.

When these cars were replaced by the much rounded 3rd generation, those were called the B3 Typ89. However, although vaguely in line, these facelift suffixes 81/85/89 did not hint to the year they were introduced. The B3 mid life facelift was actually the Typ8A and as another example, the first Audi 200 (with similar twin headlights to Typ81 Coupés) was an upmarket version of the 2nd generation Audi 100 and was the C2 Typ43. The next generation 200, the car that was rallied by Walter Röhrl and Hannu Mikkola in 1987, was the C3 Typ44, yet obviously these cars were not from 1944.

Anyway, it seems surprising nowadays, seeing Audi's many high performance cars, but apart from the low volume built Ur-Quattro there never was a 4x4 Coupé until its 1985 facelift and there never was a turbo charged coupé until the Typ89 based S2 in 1990, so Audi never really had a front line group A car when it mattered most.

Still, when the 80 Quattro came in 1983 and the Coupé Quattro in 1985, they had indestructable 5-cylinder engines, a simple 4x4 system, such were easy and cheap to maintain, and all that in the days when 4x4 was still rare in road cars. Today it seems unbelievable even a good group A Coupé Quattro had barely 200BHP, but it made a lot of sense in its days that privateer drivers were going for them.
