Many potential misconceptions. The Audi Quattro was not the first 4x4 passenger car, that was the little known Jensen Interceptor FF (Formula Ferguson). The Audi Quattro was not the first 4x4 rally car, that was a pair of Range Rovers on the Bandama Rallye 1979. The Audi Quattro also was not the start of the groupB era, as it started life as a group4 car. But the Audi Quattro was the first rally car ever to combine 4x4 and turbo, a revolution to the WRC.
It was surprising that the Quattro was not the immediate success everybody has tipped. The car was performing in a league of its own, but reliability and handling problems meant the 1981 Quattro debut year became once more a battle between conventional cars with the Quattro only spicing up things a little.
One tale about the first Quattro was when Ford's Hannu Mikkola was invited to test the car. Hannu told his Ford team mate and friend Björn Waldegaard: "I am going to Ingolstadt to test a Jeep, silly buggers! I am not going to sign, but there is no harm in testing." - when he returned from Ingolstadt and Björn asked how it was, Hannu replied: "I have signed already!"
