BMW M3 (E30) General Information

One of the most spectacular cars of early group A. It was a project that gave Prodrive a lot of recognition after the group B ban and the Porsche fall out. Without turbo and with only RWD it was an unlikely car to ever succeed on anything but tarmac, however this didn't stop Ari Vatanen having fun with one in Finland 1988.

The M3 was created with national championships in mind and after a promising debut on the Circuit of Ireland in the hands of Billy Coleman and Marc Duez, it was shortly after used on the French Rallye Grasse Alpine with Bernard Beguin, where it showed more promise. It still was a surprise and a welcome change to the norm when the by now proven BMW M3 arrived on its first WRC event, the Tour de Corse 1987, and won the event outright! Since then it became a regular winner in French, Belgium and Irish championship rallies. Francois Chatriot in France and Bertie Fisher and Austin McHale in Ireland turned the BMW M3 soon into a championship winning car! As well the Merzig based tuner Hartge took on the rally adventure with the M3 and drivers as Ingvar Carlsson (German championship) and Patrick Bernardini (French championship) with considerable success.
