Nissan 510 General Information

The Datsun 510 was the previous model to Datsun's Violet/Bluebird range. Actually Datsun called it Bluebird on some markets. But at 4m10 length and with 1600cc engines it is a tough call. One thing that strikes me personally is that despite a boxy design with twin headlights it seems quite a clean and half characterful design, which is very unusual for the Japanese in the late 1960s.

In rallying it's highlights were before the WRC started properly, but it won the 1970 Safari Rally with Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schuller. This could even half go down as the first international win at the Safari. Herrmann & Schuller were actually Germans, but Kenyan residents already since some years (that said Bert Shankland is Scottish born and Nick Nowicki is Polish born, but at least Hans Schuller never changed nationality and I strongly believe in the days of his wins Edgar Herrmann also was still a German passport holder). The pair repeated the Safari victory in 1971, however then at the wheel of a Datsun 240Z, before in 1972 Ford claimed having achieved the first international Safari victory when Finn Hannu Mikkola won.
