Nissan Violet 160J General Information

The group 4 version of the Violet 160J was mostly seen as the Violet GT. The understandable reason: Only the GT had a 16v cylinder head and such a clear advantage over the other versions. When before the most used Nissan rally car was the group 2 Violet 160J, after its launch the attention very much turned to the 16v group 4 Violet GT. There were other versions of the group 4 Violet too, but from 1978 the group 4 disallowed a change in number of valves, so the GT version of the PA10 generation soon took obvious priority. How they then got away with naming a Silvia the Violet GTS and why they wanted to do that in the first place, well sorry but you probably need slanty eyes to understand. The GTS was not a Violet at all, while in the Violet range there was a whole mess with variations, that to some degree - only to some - was cleared up with a change in the group 4 regulations.

Note: I have to admit to struggle identifying Datsun models. Trust the Japanese to call a model "Datsun Violet 160J KP710" (Sorry to say it this way, but it is not only Nissan/Datsun, another official Japanese model name: Fuji Heavy Industries Impreza WRX STI Type-RA, not to forget the 22B/GC suffix for the generation). Further, the nice attachments as "120Y, 160J, 180B..." do on occasions identify a whole model range, on other occasions just a small variation of a model. 180B is a 1.8 litre Bluebird, so far nice idea! A 240RS however is only the top range 2.4 sports version of the Silvia S110! On the Fairlady, where the "Z" is even more famous than its model name, the 240Z & 260Z indeed identifies the engine size. In turn the Silvia 200SX, the successor of the S110/240RS, this again is in all variations called 200SX, even though it is only available as a 1.8 Turbo or a 3.0 V6! If you are still not confused, for a while Datsun rallies the models "Violet GT" & "Violet GTS" alongside each other. But while the Violet GT is a derivate of the Violet 160J PA10(!), the Violet GTS is not a Violet at all, but a re-badget Silvia! And of that Silvia soon versions are rallied that indeed are called Silvia. Sorry, I myself find this confusing, and the situation is not helped when during research I obviously don't have photos with every single entry.

Sorry, if I admit to struggle with Datsun model codes, here an update how I make sense of it: The P*10 identified a model series over many generations. While the P110 & P210 were based on Austins, from P310 onwards these cars were sold on several markets as the Datsun Bluebird. In rallying we have a Datsun 510, which indeed was a P510 shell that was sold in USA as the Datsun 510, but on other markets as the Bluebird. The P610 was also a Bluebird, but short lived and sold mainly in Japan. This gives us as the international successor of the P510 the P710, which however now suddenly was marketed as the Violet! With the introduction of the P710 the Bluebird became a different model that was meant to range above the P710 Violet. In USA and Canada you find these cars officially called 510 and 710, making it somehow obvious the 710 is the successor of the 510, but on other markets it wasn't! The case not helped by Datsun introducing another number system to identify engine sizes. We indeed have the next generations Bluebird with internal codes 810 & 910, but these were strictly internal codes with the according models, depending on engine, being called Bluebird 160B/180B/200B. In contrast to the Violet 140J/160J range, that on some markets wase officially sold as the Datsun 710. And when the P710 Violet was replaced by the PA10 Violet, hence running out of numbers after the P, that generation Violet was a much different, much straighter, much more modern design which Datsun liked to underline by publicly calling it the (P)A10-Series. Interestingly after the PA10 Datsun/Nissan abolished these P*10 chassis codes completely. So please forgive me, but the way Datsun handled this it only seems logical to mix up Bluebird and Violet models.
