Fiat 125p Polski General Information

Polski 125p:

Sorry, the datasheet refers to the Polski 600, which was Polski's version of the Fiat 126. This was a crazy, tiny car and was indeed rallied in some international and WRC events - See also story below. So for curiosity value I left the datasheet as it is.

The car you find in the database results lists however is the Polski 125p. This is the straight version of the Fiat 125. And the Fiat 125 is similar to the Fiat 124, one size up on the 124. You find both models also as a Lada. The most interesting of the many Fiat derivates would be the Seat version called the 124 1430, which is a Fiat 124 with several Fiat 125 design elements and especially Fiat 125 technology. However at Lada the Lada 1300 is a Fiat 124 and the Lada 1500 derives from the Fiat 125. Since we have the Lada 1500 already in this database, you can check there, as the Polski 125p datasheet would be very similar. Indeed Lada even arguably caused the downfall of Polski Fiat. In the mid 1980s Lada launched the models Nova and Riva. Although these were still based on the same old Fiat 124 & 125 models, they were facelifts with bigger bumpers, big square lights, they looked much more modern than the unchanged Polski model and Polski stopped production of the 125p soon. Interestingly the tiny Polski 126p 600 was still produced until 2000, before Polski Fiat seized to exist.

One exception in the results lists is when you see Robin Ulyate competing in the Safari Rally with this 125p. That is actually an Italian built Fiat 125. Same technology again, but Ulyate Safari is the only known case where an 'original' Fiat 125 got a noteworthy result in international rallying.

Polski 126p/600:

Polski was basically a Polish car manufacturer producing Fiat products under licence. Polski was never a big or rich company and was never developing or running anything in rallying. The only reason to mention them here to be honest is that a Polski once managed to come 3rd overall on a WRC event. Hm, you may be excused for thinking this extraordinary performance had something to do with the fact that only 3 cars finished that event? It was the only time in the last century that a WRC event was held at the home of Polski: Poland 1973.

However to give them a little credit, Poland was never one of the richest countries and the Polski Fiat did turn into a favourite with spectators when in the early 1980s Polish drivers turned up at a number of WRC events. Alone to finish was a respactable achievement for them and their cars and they didn't always finish last!

On the 1984 Rally Acropolis it was one of the most loved stories when a Polish driver, whose name slipped my brain now, tackled (and finished) the event in his Polski-Fiat. For every uphill section he had to turn the car round and reverse up the hill because the fuel pump wasn't strong enough to get the fuel from the tank to the engine. And that despite his Polski was tuned from the original 27BHP to 34BHP. Another curiosity about this entry was that the car appeared in full Escort RS1800 or works Ascona 400 style Rothmans colour scheme - the Rothmans brand having kindly paid travel, accomodation and entry costs for the team!
