Subaru Legacy General Information

At first the Legacy (first generation despite model code “BC”) was meant to be a straight replacement to the Leone models, never mind the Legacy was easily one size up. Until now, some tiny cars ignored for a moment, Subaru only had one main model, the Leone. However the Leone was available as Sedan, Station Wagon and Coupé, as well as an even sportier coupé called Alcyone. All coupé versions were dropped with the Legacy launch. Since the Leone was Subaru’s main model, in many markets it was simply called the Subaru 1800 or the L-series 1800. The Legacy is called Legacy everywhere, only in Australia it is known as Liberty for national copyright issues. When the big Legacy was born, there were no plans yet for an Impreza range. Such the Legacy was originally meant to replace the 1800 or Leone model, even though today for its similar size many people regard the Impreza as the successor of the 1800/Leone range.

The Legacy marked the start of a new era for Subaru not only for broadening their model line up. Not only was the Legacy far more modern than Subaru's previous rally models, its launch came in line with switching rally operations from Subaru's own department around Noriyuki Koseki to the independent tuner Prodrive - and that proved a really big step in the professionality of Subaru's approach.

The Legacy performed alright from the start of its existance, but it still seemed regularly slowed by transmission and engine problems and 3 years after its WRC debut it still had not won a single event at that level. This was of major significance as by now there was talk of a new, more compact Subaru model, the Impreza. Prodrive was working flat out on this car and planned for a Rally Finland 1993 debut. But the order from Japan was very clear: No debut for a new car as long as the Legacy hasn't turned a winner! Prodrive was lucky, the Legacy's first and only victory came in New Zealand 93, the last event before the scheduled Impreza debut! Works Legacy still appeared in Australia and GB that year before it was completely replaced for the Impreza for 1994.

Despite extremely negative experiences with Subaru by the author personally, I must admit to having a soft spot for this car. It was crazy that the Japanese (Mitsubishi Galant VR4 too) launched such huge saloons for rallying. They clearly had a disadvantage for this. But these large cars were an interesting, different sight on the stages, while the Legacy RS was even the more characterful for its boxy rear design and very distinct Boxer sound.

One strange tale about the Legacy concerns exactly the engine reliability. The Subaru/Prodrive contract dictated that Prodrive would carry out development and running of the car, but the engines were tuned by Subaru Japan/Koseki. When it turned out that Colin McRae's Prodrive tuned engines in his BRC program were more powerful and reliable while the Subaru Japan engines kept blowing up in the WRC, Subaru was quick to change that part of the contract.
