Following their first tries with the actually fairly successful Galant VR4, Mitsubishi decided to follow the "all time trend" and reduce the size of their indeed rather big front line rally car. In a way it was a return to tradition, as Mitsubishi returned to the Lancer model. However this 4x4 turbo charged Lancer had nothing bar the name in common with previous, always RWD, Lancer rally cars. Mitsubishi tried to have a share in other typical motorsport tradition and decided to call this car the Lancer Evo, with Evo becoming very much a model name. Strangely however Mitsubishi carried on counting even with fresh, new generation replacement models, no other manufacturer regards evolutions this way and everybody traditionally starts at "Evo1" with the next generation or "Mk" of their model.
