Saab 96 General Information

The Saab 96 V4 1.8 (the 1.5 already 1967) came timely with the start of the WRC in 1973. This means the WRChampionship never really saw Saab in their most famous days. Saab to the day seems synonymous for 2-stroke engines and the name Erik Carlsson. And Saabs usually had that really roundy shape, which led to a famous tale about Erik Carlsson: Apparently he regularly rolled the car but never lost time when rolling, it didn't effect his competitiveness at all. This was because of the roundy Saab shape, the car would perform one roll, end back on its wheels and carry on as if nothing happened. This is why Erik Carlsson was nick named "Carlsson on the roof".

But all this was before the World Rally Championship started properly. 2-stroke engines used to be an alternative to 4-stroke petrol engines a long time ago and with the time they just were neither a performance nor an economy or environmental alternative. Saab may have rallied the 92 & 93 models and even a 95 Estate model all with 2 stroke engines. Early 96 - Carlsson's cars - still had 841cc 2-stroke engines producing some 95BHP in rally trim. But in the late 1960s, early 1970s Saab had to find a replacement for the 2-stroke engines if they were to stay alife as a car manufacturer. They still wanted to be unique and they found the answer at Ford, who gave them 4-stroke engines with a rare and unique V4 cylinder layout. The engine was most known from the German Cortina derivate Ford 17M, although in a slightly bigger displacement version. Mind you, these engines surely must have been an improvement, in rally trim power shot up from 95BHP to 170BHP (on the 1.8), a difference too big to allow for any discussions which principle had what kind of advantages. However all this meant the famous 2-stroke engines and Erik Carlsson time was a thing of the past by the time the WRChampionship was called into life.

One tale may be about 2-stroke, Stig and left foot braking. It is reported that Stig Blomqvist invented left foot braking to help FWD traction as well as stop understeer, to the day an efficient way to handle FWD cars. Another, in rally circles lesser known fact is that 2-stroke engined Saabs lacked a valve mechanism, which meant in longer braking periods it was advisable to accelerate, maybe use both feet in the process, as it was important to keep the fuel-oil mix flowing to lubricate the engine. Maybe this is indeed how the left foot braking idea was born. It is however that the Saab 96 indeed originally took over the 3-cylinder 2-stroke engines from the 93. But already in 1967 the Saab 96 was converted to the V4 4-stroke engines and got rid of the 2-strokes pretty quickly then, so Stig Blomqvist will have hardly got to drive a 2-stroke Saab.
