Volvo 142 General Information

Volvo is probably one of the most underrated WRC manufacturers. Yes, you haven't heard of them rallying for a long time, but you haven't heard of Saab rallying for a long time and many people remember Saab for rally successes, but Volvo? Indeed there were some similarities between the rally programs of both these Swedish car manufacturers. Maybe the difference was that Saab had the drivers that hold fame for longer, particularly in Erik Carlsson, Stig Blomqvist and Per Eklund. The names synonymous with Volvo were Tom Trana and Bengt Söderström. No offense to these drivers, Söderström is actually much more famous as a Ford Lotus Cortina works driver. Trana is definitely a long standing Volvo household name, but curiously right at the time this Volvo 142 took to the stages Tom Trana changed to Saab.

What also didn't help was that, like Saab, Volvo had a long rally heritage, but while works Saabs were still appearing in Sweden and Finland rallies for many WRC years, Volvo's works program was even weaker in the WRC years. The most successful rally Volvos were the PV544 and the 122 of the 1950s & 1960s. These may have been more successful than the 142, but it was only the 142 that was still occasionally seen after the birth of the WRChampionship and with a surprisingly famous selection of drivers, i.e. Hannu Mikkola, Markku Alen & Timo Salonen.

Talking of the drivers, we have to have a word on the results too, as some of the most famous Volvo 142 starts were outside the WRC. The best result of the Volvo 142 was Markku Alen finishing 2nd on the 1000 Lakes Rally 1973, but here it might be interesting that he already drove a 142 into 3rd place in the 1000 Lakes Rally in 1972. Timo Salonen drove a Volvo in the Finnish Championship 1974 & 1975. Interestingly it was the same car that Alen drove in the 1000 Lakes 1973: ABA 999.

Talking of older models above, the 142 was the first of a new era for Volvo. Today Volvos are world famous for absolutely square, straight, boxy designs, but early cars as PV544 or Amazon were exactly to the contrary very rounded and curved designs. As well the old numbers are just extremely difficult to explain, the PV444 and PV544 were succeeded by the 121, 122 & 123, which were all model variations of the Amazon. The 140 was not only the successor to the Amazon, it was the first Volvo designed with a ruler and it started an interesting nomenclature with 1st digit being the model, 2nd digit the engine, specifically number of cylinders and the 3rd digit the body shape, as in number of doors. One of the most famous Volvos of the boxy shape is the so called 240-series (even there were 262/264/265s too), see i.e. the 242 Turbo groupA. The 140 was the predecessor to the 240 and went by the same name game. I.e. a 145 would be a smaller engined estate, the last 5 means 5 doors, aka estate. Famous is the 164, a 4-door saloon with the middle 6 hinting to a V6 engine, the twin headlight front gave it an upmarket feel. Rallied was the 142, hence the 4-cylinder 2-door version of this model family.
