Toyota is one of the younger makes in rallying. The make didn't appear in international rallying until 1972 and even then it was more privateer entries by the Swedish star Ove Andersson. It was Ove Andersson who got Toyota into rallying and it was as well Ove Andersson who founded the TTE (= Toyota Team Europe) company.
But there was one argument that got never really settled between Toyota Japan and Ove Andersson: Andersson was always a fan of the small, light Corolla as the perfect rally car, but Toyota insisted on using bigger cars, mainly the sporty Celica, for motorsport programs. Even in the very early days Toyota had the idea of rallying the Corona saloon car rather than the Corolla. This didn't even change when it was the Corolla to give Toyota their first international rally win and that even on WRC level: in Finland 1975 in the hands of Hannu Mikkola.
