Mitsubishi Lancer (Colt) General Information

Like most Japanese manufacturers, Mitsubishi was a brand that discovered rallying very late. 1972 was when for the first time a Mitsubishi was listed in an international rally and the first car to give Mitsubishi international rally success was the Lancer 1600 GSR. In fact there was confusion with the model names at first as Colt (now the model name of Mitsubishi's compact car in Europe) was used as some kind of a second brand identity. So were Mitsubishi's first rally cars known as "Colt Galant" and "Colt Lancer" both of them being related to the Lancer 1600 GSR and have in fact nothing at all to do with the later small hatchback Colt model.

Sorry, this is really not easy. Colt was actually used instead of Mitsubishi as the brand name in UK and some other markets (Australia and Singapore I believe). Even though I find this is a better brand name for Europe, this did not last long. But in this case we are not talking of Colt as a brand name, but Colt as a model name:

In Japan there was an old saloon model range called the Mitsubishi Colt with engines sizes added, i.e. Colt 1100. In the late 1960s this was replaced by the Mitsubishi Colt Galant. And it was only with the launch of the 3rd generation that the Colt Galant model name was replaced by Galant Sigma (and Coupé Galant Lambda, in Europe known as Sapporo). Curiously with the launch of the 2nd generation Colt Galant a smaller sister was added, the Colt Lancer, both having Colt as model name, even though in design they were clearly two different models. However for one, the Colt Galant was indeed rallied too, but only on a very small selection of events in 1972 before the Colt Lancer took over. For the other, in contrast to the Colt Galant, the Colt bit of the Lancer name was dropped half way through the 1st generation Lancer's life. To try and solve confusion: A Colt Lancer and a Lancer 1600 GSR - as most of us know it - is in fact the exact same car, with the Colt Galant being a bigger sister that is rarely found on rally stages and ignored in the data sheet below.

In surprising similarity to Toyota, Mitsubishi's rally engagement was virtually forced onto them through privateers that would help the make to professional ways. The first big name was African Joghinder Singh, who rallied a small, underpowered but seemingly rather robust Lancer 1600 GSR on his home continent and with it won the 1974 Safari. Singh was extremely lucky to win that event. To be honest Singh and his Mitsubishi didn't even near perfom with the best. But on that 1974 Safari in heavy monsun rain, one car after the other got stuck in deep mud, but Singh and his Mitsubishi kept going and going - and this is exactly the point of the Safari! This success found the attention of a certain Andrew Cowan, who soon started using this model of car as well on a selection of rough rallies. And we all know Andrew Cowan? Until his retirment in 2003 he was the manager of Mitsubishi WRC works team Ralli Art. Indeed, the similarities between the Ove Andersson-TTE-Toyota & Andrew Cowan-Ralli Art-Mitsubishi stories are surprisingly big.
