Hyundai Accent General Information

Even though Hyundai never managed to win the F2 World Championship, this program still inspired them to come into the WRC full stop. However it was not going to be a successful program for reasons you find already in the manufacturer description. The end came a little abrupt, though, when Hyundai Korea let their running team, independent tuner MSD in the UK, down with the payments for the program. This left no option for MSD but to quit mid season 2003, an act for which Hyundai in Korea now faces a multi Million $ fine with court cases to go with it. Altogether it seemed the MSD team made a very smart attempt and people suggest the car was not as bad as one may believe, it was just underfinanced. However 4 years of front line World rallying with a top category car left this Accent still without a single podium finish.

I think I don't write less about any other WRCar. But to be honest I really struggle what else to say about this car. I don't even detest Hyundai, but on the risk to be bad and sound biased:

It would not even be fair to say the Accent in this 2nd (LC) generation was characterless. But somehow it is hard to point fingers at anyone. The Coupé F2 car story at least has some interesting highlights. In fact their driver line up was a good one. At first they took over Kenneth Eriksson and Alister McRae - see again the quite fascinating Coupé F2 story. But Kenneth was never fast on asphalt, nor known as a good test driver, and Alister, I don't think he was quite the Colin material. But MSD stretched to develop a completely new engine for 2002 (see Evos) and from 2002 they had Freddy Loix and Armin Schwarz, undoubtedly two of the most underrated drivers in WRC of that era, plus Juha Kankkunen, a 4-times World Champion between 1986-1993. Yes, that's nearly 10years ago, but it is the same as VW asking Marcus Grönholm and Toyota asking Mikko Hirvonen today, only Hyundai was even better getting KKK to drive an additional car in public! Kankkunen's experience as test driver plus occasional starts in a 3rd car in addition to Loix and Schwarz, what an excellent driver combination! Still, there never were even podium finishes. But while it is easy to point fingers at MSD, it is also a fact that the project was hopelessly underfinanced, so much so that basically even Kankkunen just wasted his time supplying his expertise. I am a personal fan of in house works teams, but in this case I think indeed it is unfair to blame the outside preparation business. I also can understand if a manufacturer does not have endless budget. You can't expect the whole argument being taken to the public, so maybe MSD is not completely innocent. But even always a rich company for doing so many things, Hyundai did simply not have a good base car in their line up in those days. And while the whole operation was desperately underfinanced, Hyundai saw fit to spend billions at soccer. I actually say way too much about this already in the main Hyundai manufacturer story. But the base car was of good size, had a relatively recognisable design and at least from 2002 the driver line up was excellent! The main downfall must have been finances, when at the very same time Hyundai proved they were not actually poor for spending billions into some childish football game! Our Ron would not agree, but just to make a point: I personally would prefer this Hyundai Accent over a Skoda Octavia, Seat Cordoba, Suzuki SX4, but somehow I cannot forgive Hyundai for the MSD Accent WRC to be underfinanced. I don't even think Hyundai wants to be compared to Seat and Suzuki, but the Suzuki SX4 was a shit base car to start with, the Seat and the Skoda were genuinely underfinanced, but Hyundai in fact had the money, they accepted their own product to look pathetic in public for rather spending billions at a kindergarden ball game! And then blame everybody but themselves for the "Accident WRC" failure? I like a lot of people in Hyundai today, so I sincerely hope they can Accept I find the Accent story quite unforgivable!
