Renault R12 General Information

The R12 was probably Renault's least successful rally car (except rare African adventures with the R16 TL), yet it enjoyed a longer life than any other Renault rally car. This was mainly down to the R12 turning a famous (cheap and simple) rally car in Southern America. There of course it rallied in the more basic TL version rather than the tuned Gordini. But with the R12 even being produced in Argentina after its original French production life, it kept its homologation really long and in the WRC Rally Argentina the car was still seen in unchanged form some 15 years after its international rally debut!!!!

The works team however used a much stronger Gordini tuned engine. The R12 was Renault's first FWD rally car. But being a relatively small engined, medium sized 4-door saloon it struggled against its opposition. I.e. even in its home events it faced opposition from the Peugeot 304 SLS. These two cars are in fact an interesting comparison. Both started life as a 1.3. But while Peugeot tuned their 1.3, Renault went the more extreme way in upgrading to a 1.6, then with mild work by Gordini, in fact same engine as found in the R17 TS. However the R12 Gordini seemed to lose its advantage here again for the 304 being smaller and lighter.

However the R12 Gordini had one up in comparison to the 304. When the WRC started Renault still occasionally used the R12, and they handed the car to illustrous names, such as Jean Ragnotti or F1 star Patrick Tambay. It would be far from true to say the R12 Gordini was complete disaster, in contrary it did quite well. But despite its long life it certainly didn't turn anywhere near as legendary as i.e. the rear engined, RWD, light R8 Gordini and it as well was no match to the R17 Gordini later.

Even without talking rallies the R12 was a very interesting car. It was clearly at least one size down on Peugeot 504 and the likes, more comparable to Peugeot 304, Ford Escort, Opel Kadett. Yet a long drop down boot made it look too big for its class and very characterful. In Australia it is known as the Renault Virage and for a long time it was THE typical Romanian Dacia car.
