I thought long about this. On the risk that I create similar confusion as with BMC ancient models, I have decided to include Talbot and its related brands here. At BMC this confusion was not avoidable. BMC owned about 464 brand names and used them all, although it was the same people. Talbot in turn had a French and an UK arm. Talbot Lago France fell under Simca ownership, Talbot UK became part of the Rootes Group, who also owned several brand names, such as Hillman, Humber, Singer, Talbot and Sunbeam - latter having been a direct Talbot daughter before Rootes. Further Rootes UK and Simca France were strongly cooperating. When in the 1970s Peugeot bought the lot, all these confusing brand names were dropped and everything re-named Talbot, the only name originally linked to both sides.
And yes, it does make sense to include this under Peugeot. Talbot was a straight Peugeot daughter, in contrary to Citroën, who is a fairly independent sister to Peugeot. Further the Peugeot Sport team of the 1980s is a fusion of the Talbot UK team, winners of the WRC 1981, and the legendary Peugeot 504 team. And indeed most of Peugeot Sport's personal originates from Talbot. Proofs of the links:
- Before the 205 T16 project Jean Todt worked for both teams!
- Talbot Sport director Des O'Dell was actually the first engineer to develop the 205 T16!
- Peugeot Sport director in the 206 WRC days Corrado Provera is originally a Talbot manager!
- Exchange of projects, i.e. Talbot Samba groupB engineered at Peugeot Sport Vélizy, non-kit-car groupA 306 engineered at Talbot Motor Co. Coventry.
- Several Peugeot works cars (especially in groupA days) carried British reg plates, spot the similarities to the reg plates of ancient Talbot models.
However of course several ancient and legendary Peugeot models are listed here too. Just thought there should be an explaination for the other brand names here. More detail about these maybe curious links you can find in the manufacturer chapters of Talbot and Simca/Hillman.
