Fiat 131 Mirafiori General Information

131 was a sequential Fiat project code made public, as seen before on 124 (Spider), 125, 126, 127, 128, the big, luxury 130, etc.. At around the time of the 131 Fiat also added model names, which later took priority - or would you have known that i.e. the Fiat Ritmo was number 138? Right with the 131 Fiat started to change the project numbers for proper names. Such on all markets this car is known as Mirafiori as well as the Fiat 131. The Mirafiori name was taken from a location on the outskirts of Torino, where the 131 plant is located and coincidentally where is also the base of Abarth. The 131 is a mid sized saloon. Hard to pin it down, Fiat regards it as a replacement to the 124 saloon (also known as Lada 1200) and replaced by the Regata=138, which was the saloon version of the Ritmo. The 131 looks a lot bigger and posher than those Ritmo and Lada equivalents, had bigger engines, all more in line with the 125 or later 132=Argenta.

You may also read our Fiat X1/9 file in the _others_, _ancient_ manufacturer range. It is an interesting link between the Fiat 124 Spider, Lancia Stratos and the 131.

If you read on you find the Fiat 131 Abarth being compared to its arch rival Ford Escort BDA and it is not quite clear why the Fiat should stand out over the Escort. Maybe two assets:
For one, the Fiat used glassfibre body panels, compared to which the Escort was much more a road car. However this trick failed to make the Fiat the lighter car in this comparison. Further, despite group4 the Fiat used clever tubular subframes to built the front and rear axles around, where the Escort was kept much more conventional and had far less options for adjustments.
Then it seemed curious that the Fiat 131 Mirafiori Abarth debuted in the Moroccan Rallye 1976. Not as a rough rally addition to the Lancia Stratos, the 131 was more like the Stratos replacement. Fiat tried to put a stop to the Stratos for reasons found in the Lancia Stratos and Lancia Beta chapters. More curious for a sprint car and Escort beater, using composites and tubular subframes, Morocco was clearly the wrong event. It was the longest marathon rally of the WRC those days and partly so rough in surface that it made the Acropolis look like tarmac. Sure enough the Moroccan Rallye 1976 was firmly in the hands of the Peugeot 504, of the 4 cars that Fiat took to Morocco 1 was wrecked in recce, another 2 in the rally, only Alen finished, and that down in 12th place! Well, already in the next events you got a very different picture of this car. The Moroccan debut was in the true sense a crash course for Fiat to improve reliability and learn how far they could take their tubular and glassfibre construction.

Still, in spirit and looks the car was more reminding of a road car than a composite racer and despite all it is hard to pin down what was so special about the Fiat 131. It was in its basic layout similar to the Escort MkII (both arch rivals, the two WRC frontrunners in the 1977-1980 period, both having a 2.0 16v engine, RWD and perfectly identical dimensions - except the Fiat being exactly 100mm longer). It used these composite materials and tubular subframes, but it wasn't a purpose built rally super car like the Lancia Stratos. Indeed the extensive use of glassfibre rather than steel did not make this car lighter than the Escort and the Fiat was actually down on power compared to the Escort! It couldn't have been the drivers either, because with Timo Mäkinen, Roger Clark, Björn Waldegaard & Hannu Mikkola Ford had undoubtadly the strongest driver line up at the time as well. OK, maybe it helped a little that Ford was only represented as a private team after winning the 1979 makes title - and 1980 was the strongest championship year for the Fiat 131. Fact however is that the Fiat 131 managed to rake in 18 WRC victories, all without a new evolution or homologation. Even until today, only the Citroën Xsara managed to beat that number of wins before at least a new evolution came in. It is weird, the Fiat 131 did never stand out in any single point, but the overall package was so good - the most permanent works drivers Markku Alen and Walter Röhrl aside - that people like Björn Waldegaard, Timo Salonen, Jean-Claude Andruet or Simo Lampinen felt honoured at the chance of driving one. Although curiously at least Fiat Group regulars Markku Alen and Bernard Darniche jumped at every possible chance to swap their Fiat 131 for the older Stratos, which however is more testimony at the superb cars the Fiat-Lancia Group turned out than making the 131 a bad choice.
