Ian Duncan Career Summary

Ian Duncan is one of the best Africa rally drivers, but also one of freak luck. He is not the most successful African rally driver. Africa's premier motorsport event (probably premier sporting event full stop) is the Safari Rally. For nearly 2 decades this event was firmly in African hands. The first Safari Rally was helt in 1953 as the East African Safari, covering 3 major countries: Kenya, Uganda & Tansania. By 1972 Hannu Mikkola became the first non-African to win this annual event. However over the years the event became ever shorter to be in line with WRC standards, it only took place in Kenya and eventually just in the outskirts of Nairobi. And a change of date is equally as important to note. The event became ever less of a muddy marathon, lost ever more its unique character and that tendency did not at all suit the locals. And in here Ian Duncan was the big exception! Even when the rally was very much a european style sprint event, Ian still had the pace and won the Safari 1994 outright! Indeed this makes Ian Duncan the last local to win this event.

But Ian the freaky:
When he won the Safari 1994, there was a question mark if he could raise the money Toyota asked him to contribute towards his entry. He found the money in form of a Kenyan sausage producer and with this he won the event - earning him the nick name "Flying Sausage"!
In 1998 Ian became the victim of one of the freakest accidents in rally history. In fact, the accident was not connected to the rally at all. Before the Safari 1998 Ian had been on the podium of the last 5 editions of this rally! And for 1998 in his works Toyota he was clearly one of the top favourites for outright victory. Barely a week before the event he decided to take a ride on his motorbike, as people do. But starting his bike, the kick starter snapped back and broke Ian's leg! He had to withdraw his entry. Ian was back for the 1999 edition, where he finished 4th, then he ended his WRC career.
