Proton

Postby RonSkoda » 19 Feb 2010 11:18

Proton had a gravel test in Wales yesterday and Chris Atkinson drove most of the day. Don't know if he's atually in contention for the drive or whether they need money but promising nonetheless.

So far I have heard Alen, Rantanen, Sola and now Atkinson considered for the drive alongside McRae.

I hope so! But I would also like to see Alistair given another seat.

Could be both! Proton are planning a 2 car team this year for IRC and Alister is virtually confirmed.

I'm wondering whether Proton Australia and Petronas might like to chip in?

Alister is confirmed, this is about N°2 alongside him. PG Andersson was also talked about but most likely seemed Tom Cave?

No, Tom Cave has bought a car to run privately with help from MEM.

I hope the Aussie get a chance with the Proton, would be perfect - also for 2011 if they go WRC !

I think WRC would be a big mistake for Proton. Why should they go to WRC if they pay triple the money for zero publicity?

On a German web site I found some Atkinson background in which Atkinson rules himself out of the Block-Monster team for 2010. However they say Atkinson tested a Proton RACING car, that sounds to me like he is going Formula1 with Lotus!

It depends on what IRC does in 2011. FIA have said that no new S2000 engine will be homologated from 2011 - so then it depends on what will happen. If both IRC and WRC choose 1600T as the format, thane the aero package would be the only difference.

But I guess FIA will decide aprox 15 minutes before Rally Norway 2011, ( ) so the manufacturers will have enough time to produce the stuff !! :D

Not a chance; they'll still be using the 2009 WRC cars (both of them!)

Both of them use 2009 WRCars?

Well, the score right now is - with no new S2000 cars without 1600T engine homologated - that both series are going with the same 1600T formula from 2011 indeed! And my bet is that this is good news for IRC. Now IRC have the same cars, I bet adopt the same 25-18-15 points system (but keep drop scores over nominations and supe-confusing the little audience we have-rally), the better events, what did I calculate 160,000% more TV (Sweden vs Monte 2010 in Germany = 5minutes vs 14hours) and indeed on the spoiler kit WRC will decide 15 minutes before round 1!

Let's get this thread back on topic please!

One driver I forgot to mention who has been linked to Proton is Duval.

According to news from Belgium, Francois Duval refused an offer from Proton for an IRC programme plus events in APRC. He was offerred 125,000 Euros but declined because he did not want to do the events in Asia. I am disappointed that neither party would budge on that because I would have liked to have seen Francois in IRC but I am pleased that Proton are looking for a good driver and are willing to pay him.

So who now? Atko? He would be ideally placed to also do some events in Asia.

Gardemeister would be a safe pair of hands too, although I doubt he could match the top IRC guys on either surface.

I read today about possible Vaclav Pech, Czech driver, but I'm not sure if it wasn't just April joke.

I think that's a joke, it would be a very big surprise! But Pech is a very good driver, especially looking at his times on the Czech championship opener last weekend against Kresta and Valousek in S2000 cars!

Looking at PGAs times in Jordan I think Proton should be chasing him! There are no date clashes with IRC/sWRC and I think sWRC is too easy for PG :D

Not confirming Atko for IRC at the same time makes me think it will be someone else for IRC rounds. Maybe Chris doesn't fancy doing the travelling to Europe all the time?

Could this mean Duval steps in for IRC only? Although in MN and Autosport this week he said he was retiring from rallysport altogether.

It would be great to see Chris in IRC, and I hope Proton's IRC campaign doesn't get moved to the backburner because of APRC.

Cool if that's true, then I can see them using him for IRC too.
