VW Polo WRC - 2012

Postby Sulland » 03 Mar 2011 18:16

More and more rumors are coming, saying VW are on its way into WRC in 2012.
Most people think that the car they will use will be the Polo, and not the Scirocco we a while thought they would use, and had the with moved to 1820mm for.

What are the latest facts from Wolfsburg ChrisB ?

I don't know mate, I have heard nothing new at all about that here in Germany. But I thought - strictly personal thought - all the much negative press rallying got here in Germany after the Kubica crash would probably have put VW off?

Most of the articles are coming from Spain and Portugal. Carlos Sainz will be involved in this program, and VW will quit the Dakar in 2012 as a works team. I've heard that this car has been in development for quite a while. Testing will start this fall, and it will use the same engine as the Fabia 1.6T. VW wants all their brands to use the same 1.6T racing engine, though tuned for each application.

Hanninen said that his drive in the Soup WRC wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for VW. Maybe this is a sign of VW joining the WRC? I've heard the decision was made quite some time ago, and they only have to announce this program. VW probably is working on a WRCar, and it might share some components with the Fabia, if VW wanted to save money, they could just take the Fabia S2000/S2000 1.6T, and transfer the components over to the Polo bodyshell, give or take a few WRCar specific tweaks.

Some tabloids are saying that VW want Petter Solberg, but VW actually wants Loeb to drive for them, and will probably do everything they can to get him. I think Petter is more likely. Petter and Hanninen would make a good team, with Al-Attiyah driving for the B-team or 3rd car ala Al-Qassimi.

VW has apparently hired an ex-Subaru and Peugeot engineer, François-Xavier Demaison, according to a Autohoje. He was also an engineer for PSWRT.

Then again, there are those who still think VW are going to get serious with a project like this.

German media is finally covering the VW announcing the WRC rumors. Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese sources were the first to report it. Sport1 posted this on their website, and I've found out that they air TeleShopping. Don't know what that is, but I assume it's where you can buy stuff on TV, or another name for infomercials.

Yes, it is something where you can buy cheap stuff that nobody needs at outrageous prices, like finger nail extensions, garden furniture polish, plastic handbags, VWs...

One person said the Scirocco has a lower CG than the Polo, but VW is most likely going to use the Polo and not the Scirocco for their future WRC program.

Motorward said that Skoda was interested in a Fabia WRC program, but VW forced them to scrap it, in favor of a Polo WRC. Skoda wasn't interested in the WRC at first, but the new regulations looked tempting, and then Mr. Hrabanek said it would be interesting to have a WRC program. Maybe its better for VW in the amateur series, and Skoda in the real one. Apparently, VW is not using a custom engine. VW will be using an engine based off the new 1.6T Polo R that is coming out in the near future. Oreca will build the engine, and it's probably a hybrid race built/production engine unit.

VW will officially announce the program on March 22nd, but we know that they've practically announced their program well in advanced. Demaison will be the chief engineer for this project which seems to be better than other VW bureaucrats.

VW has postponed the debut of their WRC program on March 22nd, to a later date TBD. Probably Rally Germany or some other European event.

Skoda is using Reiger dampers for this year, and VW is evaluating whether or not they will use them for the Polo WRC. I suspect that VW will use components from the Fabia S2000/S2000 1.6T in the new Polo WRC, to save on development costs. I could see the Polo WRC, being a Fabia S2000 1.6T in a Polo shell with the WRC mods.

Looks like the VW will make an announcement on May 8th. Right when Mini debuts their car, VW announces their program. Of course it will be a Polo WRC, but a CrossPolo WRC would sound interesting. At least that car could easily compete with the mini. Demaison is probably looking at the Fabia and seeing which parts he can reuse on that car. I would expect VW to take the Fabia S2000 and transfer as many components as possible onto the Polo bodyshell. Demaison seems to be a bit amateur to be a head engineer of a WRC project, but we shall see.

fx is no amateur, he ran gronholms title winning 206 and petters title winning subaru, besides they wouls be insane to not make a close a copy of the skoda as possible. skoda has the real rally heritage and skill. vw will be in the underdog position but i can imagine that image wont sit well with them. if they dont get to look like masters of it pretty much immediately they will probably just run away like usual!!!!

That is what ChrisB is wanting to see.

Kris Nissen said that it could be possible to have both a WRC and Dakar program.

Looks like VW has debuted their WRCar in China :). It even has a 1.6T engine!
