North One dead, Eurosport take over

Postby RonSkoda » 07 Jan 2012 11:44

It looks like North One Sport have kicked the bucket and Eurosport will take over, although there has been no official confirmation.

This has to be good news for WRC and rallying in general. Unfortunately too late for any live coverage from Monte.

Hope Eurosport and FIA can work together now to repair the damage done to WRC over the years and rebuild it's media profile.

Jarmo Mahonen said that he would like all WRC events and stages to be broadcasted live, either through Eurosport or IPTV.

It could be a good thing or a bad thing, if you live in the US. I am sure there will be a US deal at a later date with tape delayed Eurosport coverage. I am sure the US licensee will ruin the coverage. At least Discovery did not alter the coverage by using an American commentator. I am sure WRC will be broadcasted live which is a good thing. Maybe this will mean a more endurance like format for future seasons.

Eurosport will air Rallye Monte Carlo. It will be highlights, but I am sure the "Power Stage" will be broadcasted live. Sport1 will also air it as well, but in only 20 minute highlight sessions where it is only 5 minutes long, but with 15 minutes of commercials and nonsense.

Eurosport Germany will also air MC, and you are allowed to press the mute button if you do not like the commentators. Proper coverage will likely be on Youtube in English.

Yep, the commentators are the only downside of it all. I don't think Monte Carlo will be on Sport1. It is in their program guide (just the usual 5mins per night plus power stage, which I think we didn't have since Jordan last year), but the Sport1 contract was with NOS!

Even Loeb does not like the NOS coverage.

Very disappointed. Eurosport are only on Pay TV in Australia, so I will have to search for WRC coverage on the net. I love WRC, but not $60 per month for three half hour programmes per rally...

Day 1 is already on Youtube.

Eurosport is now broadcasting WRC in HD if you have access to Eurosport HD.

Now I have heard that Eurosport might not even film the rest of the season. I do believe Sweden is safe, but who knows. I am sure the FiA has a plan B, because it could mean the WRC is without TV coverage.

irally are saying the problem revolves around TUPE transfer of undertakings protection of employment, basically meaning the NOS tv crew should be getting jobs with Eurosport...

Looks like Eurosport might not film Sweden after all. Maybe there is a solution, but who knows for sure.

I guess this is what is going to happen to the WRC if the world really is going to end.

Official press release about the promoter situation. FiA will find a production company for Rally Sweden, but will likely have to find a new promoter. There have been mixed reports about Eurosport and the FiA, in regards to the WRC. New parties are now being interested and I could see either Sky or some shadow of the old NOS. I believe Eurosport did not like Todt's vision of having rallies in China, India, and Russia and they (Eurosport) wanted control over the WRC calendar. Yet, there are people who say Eurosport is working on a promoter deal, but I think they are done with promoting the WRC.

Great pic rv!!!

Why did I think the FiA would have a better handle on organising this sort of mess?

Sweden need $300,000 for the TV production - why the hell haven't FIA written a cheque? WTF?
