Hyundai i20 WRC

Postby rv65 » 08 Dec 2012 21:42

We all know that Hyundai is working on a i20 WRC, but this video above is supposedly a very basic test mule going around Hyundai's Namyang R&D center in South Korea. I believe the driver is just an engineer, and probably has never really driven a rally car before. The audio is very bad and could be mismatched. Hyundai is going to do this program in house in Germany, but initial R&D is done at Hyundai's Namyang R&D center where they engineer their road cars. I also hear that Kris Nissen will be the team leader, and lead engineer could be Michele Nandan. I hope Hyundai does well, but it could make for a good car for gentleman drivers.

It would be great to see Hyundai do well. They are a much more "mature" company than their last venture into WRC. Their road cars seem to be well engineered and of good quality now, hopefully that will reflect in their WRC programme.

Apparently, that video above is fake. On Colin Clark's twitter he said that a supplier that was working for them was due to deliver WRC spec parts and were now to change them to R5 ones. I guess Hyundai might be going R5, or the WRC is switching over to R5 or an improved version.

Maybe Hyundai is launching both WRC and R5 as well. I do know that Kris Nissen is rumored to be the team leader of the new Hyundai WRT in Germany. Hyundai is recruiting people to work at their new Motorsport division in Offenbach, Germany.

My Spanish is a bit rusty, but basically this article says that Hyundai has purchased a building in Offenbach, Germany. It also says that Michele Nandan will be the head engineer for this project once his contract with the FFSA is up. Hyundai will spend around 60-70 million EUR on this project which is more than what Citroen is spending, but not as much as VW which is rumored to be spending around 80-100 million EUR. There will be a Scandinavian team manager who could very well be Kris Nissen and his name will be announced soon. Clarky could be wrong, but who knows for sure.

Another article in regards to Hyundai and the WRC. Apparently the driver in that video could have been a journalist as Hyundai was letting the media have a go in their WRC study vehicle. Development will begin next year and more information is coming out soon.

Pictures of the i20 WRC in test livery. Driver for this test is Kwang il-Song as Hyundai does not have a test driver yet. I think he is an engineer, or someone involved with the program. Hyundai was rumored to initially develop the i20 WRC in Korea, so it could make sense. Hyundai will announce more information shortly.

Hyundai will base their team in Alzenau and Michel Nandan will be the lead engineer. Hyundai will announce some more info next month which would likely include the announcement of Michel Nandan as lead engineer. Initially, Hyundai will use the current i20 for the base of their WRCar, but Hyundai will also develop a WRC on the next gen i20. That probably won't debut until 2015 or 2016. The car that was shown on the internet is probably a mockup and the real car will debut in 2014. Hyundai says they can get a car done by the end of next year.

Michel Nandan will be the team boss for Hyundai. Thought it was going to be a Scandinavian, but I guess he does not want an engineering job.

You are right, it is a curiousity that! I too thought it was a Scandinavian. One rumour said Kris Nissen from Denmark, though no idea where that came from, why did he leave VW? Michel Nandon is a guy I have great respect for, but he is neither Scandinavian, nor a team manager....

Maybe someone from an Engineering background could work, as he could better communicate with the engineers.

Well, I think Nissen could have left, due to some articles alleging him of Sexual harassment with a Woman. I believe Tina Thorner was harassed sexually by him, and that got published on Swedish and German media.

What you say about Tina Thöner and sexual harassment I have heard and read too, and why am I not surprised of this inside VW?

Anyway, news from Hundei. Nice new colour scheme, especially as this colour scheme means you don't see the ugly lines of the car so much. A bit surprised of the 2nd photo, does this mean as driver they are looking for someone like Burcu Centinkaya?

One guy on instagram named Gianluca posted a pic of some number plates. This post was tagged with Hyundai, i20 and WRC, so it must be number plates for the cars.

ALZ HM-1
ALZ HM-2013

Hyundai is basing the WRC program in Alzenau, hence the term ALZ and HM stands for Hyundai Motorsport. I think 1 could mean Chassis 1 or something like that.

Hanninen has supposedly been linked to the i20 WRC program, but now Panizzi has also been linked as a test driver.

Kris Meeke and P-G are high up the list at Hyundai.

Thanks for the info.

As with the number plates you mentioned before, they are a little confusing. ALZ is not a current German area code. Several German areas are running out of number combinations and therefore some new area codes are opened up, but in the lists I have seen so far ALZ was not one of them. It may still be coming, but until now Alzenau should show AB- reg plates for the nearest larger city Aschaffenburg.

First test video of the i20 WRC. Sounds a little like a high pitched 307 WRC, but I could not fully make out the number plate but the area code is not ALZ. Actual area code is AB. I did hear that Hyundai is working on a 2014 i20 WRC, but there are also plans to make a 2015 i20 WRC based on the next version. Pilot was Bryan Bouffier. Some people on other forums say there is some kind of suspension issue or are they could be using a gravel car on tarmac. Hyundai is supposedly using Reiger supsension. Another poster thinks this car is 1.26 sec/km slower than the others, but we shall see come Monte Carlo 2014.

Thanks for the update, RV65! I can't see much of the reg plate either. But it looks very much like a German trade plate, so nothing to go by at all. Still, AB would make more sense than ALZ. As explained earlier, ALZ is not a current area code, it might be in future, but until now the next larger city applies, which is Aschaffenburg aka AB.

Looks like Neuville will be number 1 in Hyundai in their first year. Congrats and hope you have chosen correct!
Lets see who will be numer 2 and 3?

Yes, can confirm Neuville at Huhndae for 3 years. But I fear he has chosen wrong. The Fiesta suited his driving style. Neuville at Hundei, I guess it is VW all the way then next year, no car/driver combination there any more to challenge Ogier/VW.
