The event still uses the classic Turini stages, however many of the other framous stages are gone - in 2003 the event will return to the Gap region for the first time in a number of years, however the Sisteron stage will not be run, a great loss.
First run in 1911 the event is cemented in the rally books as one of the greats.
In 2009 the Rallye Monte Carlo turned its back on the WRC for exactyl the paragraph above. Modern WRC rules with single service and clover leaf stage layout meant it lost too much of its spirit. The IRC allows more freedom, all the sudden it can be a 4 day event, starting in the Ardeche region, finishing of with Turini Night - the Night of the long Knives, with night stages not allowed in WRC. In IRC the Turini Night even comes live on EuroSport TV! Now that is how to start a new season!
